Presently, I drive an old model Toyota RAV4 and a 2003 Subaru Forester. I have changed Mechanics 3 times since July last year. They keep disappointing me. You give your car to a mechanic you consider as experienced, one has to sit down there for him to do the right thing and I don't have the time. Immediately you leave, he ask his boys to do the work and I'm not comfortable with these small boys expertise.
The second one tell lies as if tomorrow won't come. Common parts, he'll tell you is 20k and still charge me high after scraping me financially on parts. The third one will not just do the work except you are there and sometimes I do see up to 4 car owners dragging him.
Please what's your experience with our local mechanics and how have you been coping with them?
Assuming say as u Dey change mechanics,u Dey put eye for d work ni.U for don get like 3 different working experience.
Just go for d 4th one.cus mechanic wahala no dey finish

My advice to every car owners

- Always ask for the faulty spare on your car when your mechanic change them

- Get the part yourself if u know the original

- Stay with your mechanic during repairs

- Don't accept any drinks or hospitality from your mechanic to avoid paying double

- Except major fault, don't allow your car to sleep in mechanic workshop

The problem with all this, people have jobs. Is one going to take a whole day off work to sit with a mechanic?

Firstly in the world of today, you've got to have a scanner. If your car develops fault you scan it yourself and know what the problem is before going to the mechanic workshop.
Secondly you should have a mechanic for different occasions, like me I have a mechanic that changes my shock absorber brake pads, I have another one if I want to do some serious work on the engine I have another one that changes oil.

WOW you must be loaded.

Once they touch your car, they will 99.99% introduce a new issue.

We lack competent mechanics in this country.

Pray hard to get the right mechanic.
Else you will be made to pay for what you never needed.

My mech. then, whom I took a Toyota Camry to, for auto gear failure, told me we needed to change gear bus, after he made me spend much in his att not to repair it.

He gave me a connection of a man to send me gearbus from Lagos, but obviously, the plan was to scam me of #20k.
I found out this because I got the same gearbus from Lagos for #20k less when I used another connection.

Lastly, my mechanic couldn't fix the gear bus well, and when I refuse to leave his workshop, he kept making trouble that, he doesn't want working when owners of the vehicle are around, that I should leave...

I later found out he was obliged to do invite another mech. to come and do the work for him as he had failed...

I used to wonder what the hell is this guy doing as a doctor for Christ sake.
His knowledge of repairing cars is crazy

If he was abroad, by now he will be world class car engineer.

I have spent unnecessarily on my car(golf gti), I just dumped it in my compound using bolt for now, until I have enough money to fix and swap the car asap. I will opt for a 2010-12 Corolla next time
Re: Antics Of Local Mechanics by brutal1(m): 5:49pm On May 20, 2022
The problem with these guys is that they believe they know more than the car owners and cannot be corrected, also they fail to upgrade their skill in a world where technology is changing rapidly. I don’t leave my cars with my mechanics too, they don’t know the value of your car or your life so they just use the Datsun training to work on your 2016 BMW x5 car, m’y mechanics service my car in my house, I don’t drive my car the day I want to service it, I drive after servicing it. I buy my oil (mobil1) for any v6 the only thing I trust them to buy is the filter and I must see it, And I watch him change it. They change my break pads at their place and i supervise myself, You can’t just give mechanic money to change oil and leave your car, some don’t even know the value of your car so they can pour a black oil from another car and chop your money and that’s bye bye to your engine. Your catalyst could be removed as well, I have different mechanics for different jobs too, and I stay with them, I know some of you are very busy but a careless mistake by these guys will send you to comma and you will eventually die. I call my mechanics before driving there and once I get there they start working on my car, I have a good rapport with these guys, I bought a tool kit myself, bought a scanner, watch YouTube videos, I cannot remember the number of times that I had to draw their attention to many things…oversight…these guys have many wives and concubines (when you leave your car with them , they drive it to go and see their girlfriends and impress them with it , they can even do doggy in a car that you have not
Kissed madam inside) me that I have one wife sef my mind is busy thinking about home so how do I expect someone with 4 to focus? I can’t forget dada at Aleshinloye ..:this one is an Aboki mechanic (grew up in the north) he smokes weed before work, during and after. The teeth are neither black nor green or brown. He will be working and looking for tools that are just by his side, there was a day he accused his comechanic of stealing a tool that was just by his side. I gambled and left one Corolla with him to change the oil, me that I was using my Mobil normal he went to buy one foreign oil like this (trying to remember the name) castrol or so ….when it was time to change it, after checking like 3 places and I couldn’t get it I went back to me Mobil jeje…don’t just leave your car with any mechanic ..:some of them have boys learning under them, once you leave , those ones use your car as a practical …may they not use Micra idea to finish your Venza, or complex cars like benz, bmw ooo….finally don’t joke with anything that can get you killed pay attention to it yourself….

Nigeria's Mechanics are terrible. They failed to develop themselves. They continue using old methods or force to lose or replace parts. There are many resources for them to watch and read but they will not. I finished most of the technical things myself. Especially the electrical aspects.

Mechanics!!! Fear them. Only one I have found trust worthy and know his work well is Mr Yemi in Abuja.
Im in Abuja I bought an accidented car from US . Got a mechanic in Lagos who gave me a quote to put the car in order and the duration. Gave him advance and he kept asking for money and till he collected the balance telling me next week for almost one month. Last last i went to Lagos and made a visit to the mechanic. HAAAAA!! The car was in a worse state than i received it from the USA. iTs like he damaged it more. He said he did everything he said. Gave me a long list. I quickly arranged and towed it to another mechanic. That was like frying pan to fire. This mechanic was collecting like N150k from me every month for like 3 months and doing little or nothing. Na so i quickly call a driver I know and he went there to collect the car and i have since abandoned it. After years I went back to the car got another mechanic. Na so the mechanic told me gear box no good I should bring N250k gear box for Honda 2010. And a daily fee for the car at his workshop. I weak. Last last i go myself buy the gear box less than half that cost. Mechanics!! Another in Abuja collected my N80k and has been running and another my N100k and has been running. Nigeria!!!

You've got to be very vigilant & observant.
Don't just think everything about the car's running & fault should be left for the technician.
There are car maker's fora to learn from.

I have suffered enough
There was a time in 2016-2017 more than 2 years when I observed my car was struggling to shift to higher gears.
It will be hot like it's overworking.
I connect with cars & can see that the heart of the engine was carrying too much load.
I strived continuously to solve it to no avail
My exhaust was said to be blocked
I removed it
My trusted mechanic said I need to buy original plug of 3K each making 18K
I coughed it out
Lies!!!
Turns out the problem I was battling with for 2 yrs plus was 1 of my brake callipers fused/bound together with its brake pads as if break was pressed and that was it
It got bound on one late night while in motion & I couldn't move again
Came down from the car to see that the rim of the affected wheel was piping & smoking hot
And that was it

Very unserious bunches

In Nigeria u have good heads who know what they are doing but unfortunately they lack the requisite tools, lack shelter, lack presentation and charge between 3k to 5k for 5 hour job done.
There are really good mechanics in Nigeria, the only thing lacking in them is the available tools. It amazes me the risk they take with their lives to fix cars absent tools. Then there are bad mechanics as well
You don't know anything.

the rule of thumb for me is to delay my repairs till Saturday when I can sit all through the day with them in app mechanic Abuja, that way I can price needed parts with the right quality and effective monitoring while they are at work, mechanics are heartless and cheats, give them the slightest chance and you get ripped to pieces, cry
