Former Secretary to the Federal Government and one time Minister of Finance, Chief Olu Falae, has condemned calls by many Nigerians for the 2023 presidency to be zoned to particular regions of the country, insisting that there was no provision for zoning in the Nigerian Constitution.

The former National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), who disclosed this on Friday when he played host to executives of the Ondo State chapter of the party in Akure, faulted calls for zoning, saying it was no guarantee that such would produce a competent president.

“Politicians should stop deceiving the people by putting zoning in the party constitution, where it is not valid. Nigerian Constitution supersedes the party’s constitution,” Falae said.

“There is no provision for zoning in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Zoning is not part of the conditions for Nigeria’s presidency.

“If all aspirants accept it and they did not challenge it, it stands, but if a single aspirant challenges it, the Nigerian Constitution will override what is in the party constitution,” the elder statesman added.

but in this Nigeria's situation where issues of zoning have always constituted serious problems for our major parties, why can't we make it a law and settle this raging matter once and for all?

heterogeneous country like Nigeria can't do away with zoning, that's the fact. I was actually expecting this to be considered in the recent electoral amendment act.

Yes
But we all know that on one hand we always have laws on another hand there are norms.

Having a handbook on how to do something, doesn't mean you can disregard your own judgements.

No one says it is a written constitution however, it's some form of convention in the past for ease of selecting the party's candidate. .

Confusionist elder statesmen.
E be like say na age don dey affect all of una which could be understandable.

I'm sure no one has ever claimed this gentlemen's arrangement brought about by the multi-ethnic position of our country is simply to enshrine and encourage a sense of belonging amongst the varying ethnic groups and regions.

Yes, it isn't particularly stated in the constitution but you were okay with it when it benefited you to represent an attempted placation of the SW region against your SW brother OBJ upon MKO's deletion.

Nonsense and ingredient double-barrel mouth old men....

Dear Mr Falae,

Nigeria is not one. The loopsided appointment Buhari did in his tenure has proven beyond reasonable doubt that Nigeria is not one.

For the continuous existence of this contraption called Nigeria, it is only fair power rotates.

If the north choose not to allow power rotate because they are heavily populated zombies (vote of one zombie equals vote one of sensible person), then 2023 election would just be the right ingredient to break this nation. Thank you.

Regards.

Old fool!

No wonder Nigerians rejected you like plague in 1999.

Now I see it’s because of this warped reasoning of yours.

I know your line of argument… that zoning is not a Democratic Principle.

But let me ask you, are Democratic Principles cast in stone?

A little summary of the evolution of democracy would tell you how it first started as a direct participation of every member of the state in the running of government. But when population growth made that impossible, representational democracy was birthed. Overtime people saw that concentrating legislative, executive and adjudicatory powers on one man was becoming too dangerous, the idea of Separation of Powers came to be.

I’m not here to lecture you, just to point out to you that the Democracy you are defending have consistently taken form in conformity to existential social realities of any given society.

But no, you want it as it is. Your extent of education did not allow you know that the concept of democracy can be deconstructed and redefined to suit the existential realities of the present Nigerian, nay Ebonyi, society where tribe and clan is now a major consideration in power discourse.

Men with brains like you, defined what democracy is today and what constitutes its principles. But those principles are not dogmatic. Why can’t we deconstruct democracy and redefine it to include zoning as to engender peace and mutual harmony of different peoples of our political constituencies?

And if you say zoning impedes merit, I have asked you to tell me which zone of Nigeria that is in dearth supply of capable men and women.

Insisting on the politics of survival of the fittest or the most powerful or the richest or the most connected would only lead to degeneration to the Hobbesian state of nature and a drift away from civilization. And guess what happens when a section of the society is continually shortchanged through your kind of argument… a time comes when they can’t take it anymore and they resort to restiveness and civil disobedience. IPOB in southeast is an example.

The Yerobber 2facedness in Falae is talking.
Ogbonnaya Onu won APP presidential nomination but had to step down so this same Falae will emerge as d candidate for the AD/APP alliance, is that not zoning already?

Why make zoning a law, when you can decentralize the government to maximize the actual benefits of our diversity?

Greed of milking other regions using Federal Power is the only thing holding Nigeria together as well as tying down the progress of the country.

all of a sudden the same politicians who carry zoning and federal character principle on their heads are denouncing it and championing for merit because it's the SE turn to produce president.

Do you notice how all yoruba leaders like tinubu osibanjo falae etc stopped talking about zoning and have turned megalomaniacs.

Its good somehow. After the election, Efulefu losers like Umahi, orji kalu, Anyim etc will understand why IPOB are doing what they are dong.

Perhaps the reason Obi Pandora Japaaaa....

Imagine having a chicken hearted person like Obi as the president, is he still going to be talking and acting like a woman like he used to be as a governor? That attitude even reflected on the manner he crossed over to LP, a party he knows even if he contests for Anambra governorship under, he can not win. No....we need a man of action as our next president.

Sir, you benefited from zoning.

There is legally right; there is morally right.

Would Falae support another Fulani from Katsina for another 8 years?

Political correctness abi....
The law wey dey kampe self, ppl no follow am..

Something like "Bail is free" that usually occupies like 10ft by 10ft in every police station , na that one be law abi..

We should ve evolve past this situation in this country, something like this or same religion ticket won't work

Some ppl may say we should look beyond tribalism and focus on capabilities of individual candidates, are they saying that out of millions of southerners, there is no capable candidates, or even among the tens of aspirants.
In a sane situation, it should even microzone to geopolitical zones as long as we have provision for geopolitical area.

If they want to abolish zoning, then we should abolish geopolitical zones, abolish state of origin, quota system etc etc

I don't have problem with an Hausa/Fulani man remaining a president so far my interest as a Yoruba man is well represented in his administration without any bias.
