See Bros leave talk! Most persons that got into tech, got in because of the money... But along the line, what keeps you going is the passion... I ain't gonna deny that...
I started learning Web dev in February this year... I can boldly tell you that two things attracted me to tech.
1. The pay
2. The fact that you can work from home. Then, you get to live a low-key life.
But along the line, I became passionate about it.
I have rejected a job in the banking industry just to focus on this part even though I don't know or it is not sure I am gonna get a job so soon after learning and I don't have so much financial strength to carry on for so long but I have chosen that I am gonna stick to it.
I got in with the mindset of just learning front-end development but now, I virtually just want to know everything... Like I want to know how the web works fully(from Front-end to back-end) and even other fields of tech. I am just so curious to acquire knowledge and know more about the field(not just web development alone).
So, telling someone who knows nothing about tech to be driven by passion is like telling a man to fall in love with an woman he is never met or spoken to before.
Something will definitely drive you into the industry but what is gonna keep you is most likely gonna be the passion which you develop as time goes on...
So, please let's minimize this passion stuff for newbies trying to break into the field.
my thoughts though

Its really cool that u ended up developing the passion, yeah maybe you're right

I hear people say Data Science/Analysis. I never knew they could be separated as a career path. kindly expatiate on the differences.

There is this Thread "Chronicle of a Data Scientist/Data Analyst" by Ejiod. I have not gone through from page 1 to the end ( I'm still on page 25). I think he stated somewhere that one can begin to make money in the first year and then continue learning and getting better.

What can you tell me about that please? Thank you

Hey Chief.
I'm quite curious and would like to know which path you eventually chose...

For your question;
Data analytics is simply a broad term, divided into several subsets which are careers on their own. They include:
Data Analyst/Business Intelligence Analyst
Machine Learning Engineer
Database Management Engineer
Data Scientist, e.t.c

In Nigeria, you'd see roles revolving around Data Analyst (which can be called a lot of things by recruiting personnel such as fleet maintenance analyst, operations analyst, regional analyst, etc), Business Intelligence and maybe Database Management for the companies that are already on cloud based systems...

As a data analyst, you'd most likely need domain knowledge because you will need to understand the business needs or at least what goes on in that industry so you can identify outliers and incorrect data...this depends on individual company workflow (i.e. if you get already cleaned data or if everything is a mess and you need to do everything yourself)...

I'm currently a D.A. so this is the best I can say...

I'm also looking at going into Dev simply because I'd like to create solutions and not just discover trends and patterns...In a way, I feel that I'm not good with colours and the creative process required but then again... Life's short and I think I'll just see what's there...

I'd really love to know what you eventually decide.

I was quite reluctant to reply to this post because the "which one pays the highest" sounded like greed and greedy people put me off.
But at least you want to hustle legally and earn money instead of crimes and vices and so that should be supported.

Anyway, to your question

Firstly; The highest paid are the Project managers and Tech Lead with decades of experience that work for Fortune 500 tech companies. Switching areas of specialising because one pays more might get you lesser pay as "Years of professional experience" is the golden criteria

Secondly: Since money is the goal, the question shouldn't even be the highest paying. It should be the quicker to getting a paying job. Lower barrier of entry. Because if you are told the highest paying but it take 3 years to get a junior role, can you be that patient?... Exactly

So my personal ranking from lowest barrier to highest:
QA tester
Product manager
UI/UX(product designer)
Web
DevOps/Cloud
Automation
Mobile/Desktop
Game development/3D
Video Editing
IoT and Embedded systems
Drivers

A lot of people might disagree with this list but it was made using certain criteria
1. Hardware requirement. If you don't have a beastly system just forget Mobile and Game/3D... You won't go anywhere(fast). By beastly I mean 16GB Ram, SSD and a good graphic card for Game/3D. Although I started as mobile dev with a 2gb RAM core2duo system, I can tell you it was hell till I got a better system as a gift.
The top 6 can be done on an average computer. So If you can't shell out 200k+ for a computer, your choice is already being made for you.

2. Getting a job: You see those last 2, I doubt there are many Nigerians that work on those full-time. Getting a local job would be hard or even not possible. Hardly will a foreign company send you their hardware to work with remotely and e fit take you years before your first gig
You're more likely to get a job as Web dev, Mobile dev, or UI/UX. Of course, the competition here is rising on a daily basis. So be ready to beat a lot of people to get a job

3. Naturally affinity. I know its about the money, but don't be that Airbender trying to waterbend when you're not the avatar(a genius). What I'm saying is, even if you want the highest paying, if it doesn't want you, it doesn't want you.
Someone who sucks at logic would suck as backend dev and will always be throttled by their inability. Remember, the best make the big bucks not the speciality
So choose an area that resonates with you and what you do best.
If you're a creative with an eye for colour, UI/UX and frontend is perfect
If you prefer logic and architecture, backend or mobile
Automation and processes? DevOps and Automation
Management? Product manager
Nothing will frustrate you in tech than being that fish that wants to climb a tree. Find the ocean and swim with the current

In summary,
how much do you have to invest in hardware?
how long can you patiently learn before the bucks starts flowing? else you find yourself like many devs I know switching stack with every breath they take
what am I good at?
Can I afford to fight off thousands of Nigerians, Indians, Pakistans in this field in a year time?.. Will frustration from rejection mails depress me?

Post the answers to theses questions and the stack chooses you not the other way round

Goodluck man
This PM, is certification a requirement?

Some niche field are devOps, QA Engineer you'll get a job asap. Mobile Devs is still a niche. Don't jump into web dev like React, jump into platforms built with React like Shopify, Airtable. Platforms bring money e.g WordPress Themes. Integration like the sort of Airtable, Softr and Zapier.

There's Chrome Extension, there's even Webflow gigs.

You can set yourself as a consultant and be earning money. That's the route I'm taking until bigger projects come, sometimes you might even think of a product the more you do platform gigs.

This was what i wanted to discuss with you earlier bro.

They have several stages of acceptance:
1. Basic knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript and git/Github. If you don't have the skills, you can take a pre-course.(1 month should do this)

2. You solve 2 easy questions on Hackerrank

3. You sign a check-in form to validate your internet speed and ability to speak English.

4. If you pass the 3 stages above, you get paired to three other applicants from round the world to build 3 different projects from Freecodecamp's five projects on responsive web design, Plus solving two more questions from Hackerrank.
You and your reviewers will review each others coding skills, use of GitHub, internet speed and English skills.

5. If they pass you for stage 5 above, you do a 30min interview.

6. If successful, you sign the Income sharing arrangement, provide ID and proof of residence.

Finally, you're in
They don't offer any salesforce courses or data analysis?

Currently, I am even considering to go back to the Uni to study Computer Science... But I got in for the money initially but currently, I am being driven by passion...

So, let me use this opportunity to ask... Is it possible for someone who didn't study Computer Science in his/her first degree to go for a Master's in CS? Possibly after acquiring online certificates...

Depends on the University, generally you should study something related to IT before you can move to an MSc in CS.

But sincerely, you don't need any MSc knowledge in CS to understand the core of tech, MSc is not for people learning basics of how things work, they expect you to have learnt a lot during your undergraduate.

If you need to learn the introduction to anything Frontend, you can subscribe for AlgoExpert Frontend course: algoexpert.io/frontend/product

Be careful of not jumping to React, Angular without learning the basics of HTML and CSS first, too many nonsense React devs do this rubbish. Then they get stuck on a basic CSS problem for weeks.

Unpopular opinion but W3schools, and Tutorialspoint will actually teach you the core basics, people need to learn core basics before jumping inside anything.

Many people (like yourself) who are now rushing to Tech are the ones doing it for the money. That's why you are interested in the highest paying most envious positions. Someone mentioned Data Science up there and that's because that's what also drove them, money. He doesn't know that Embedded C programmers or Hardware Driver programmers earn an unbelievable amount. And they aren't the most envied. Many people will tell you to focus on learning the state of the art Programming Languages but COBOL and Fortran programmers earn salaries that a lot of people will be envious of even though people will laugh at you if you say you program in COBOL or FORTRAN. Listen my friend, there is no such thing as the highest paid and most envied role in tech. This isn't medicine where everyone wanted to be a surgeon.

Congrats on the PC, itshould be okay for web developement and most other parts of tech. Mobile dev might be a pain though and game dev is a no-no but still its a great system to get started with

And about the bolded part, It wasn't meant to discourage you at all. In fact, it should urge you to grind harder as the competition would get stiffer but tech is a great choice that could change your life for good so put in all your best.

I like your candid posts.

I believe you have the passion and satisfaction. If money is the main driver you'll end up unhappy and moody. Tech pays when you put in the required work, the awareness is increasing and the the competition is also increasing. That itself will be an issue because projects drives demand. Salaries and pay is purely based on economies. There are many factors why tech salaries are high. Factors include revenue generated, demand and supply, value, users.

I tell others if you're serious and put in a considerable hours of work everyday into web dev, you will be guaranteed a starting pay of at least $500 a month in 6 months. That's a good ROI for someone in Nigeria. Many have taken advantage of this opportunity which is nice.
On the other hand, I'm not a fan of learning all the new tech and burning my calories on continuous self development. At this time, I need a work/life balance. I enjoy listening to music and watching movies, playing games, having fun and enjoying life in my little way.

Follow the path below:

1. Learn the basics of HTML, CSS and JavaScript.(Not indept, but basics. On a scale of 10, It should be 5,5 and 6 respectively).

2. Pick up Java. Don't compromise the basics. Learn the syntax and semantics well.

3. Pick up Spring/Spring Boot Frameworks(Understand the MVC)

4. Learn a database. MySQL is ok.

5. Learn Unit testing (This will set you apart and get employers interested in you)

6. Learn Maven, Hibernate, JPA and Maven(These are just implementation processes. Don't be scared. After you learn the basics, you can pick this in 3weeks)

7. Most important part: Build at least two solid projects that implement all the above. Two sold projects are better than vague 10 random projects.

8. If you want to stand out as I did, write one cloud certification. Got Google's scholarship and wrote GCP, and did Microsoft 30 days challenge and got a discount of Azure, which I paid just $40(17k). This will make you irresistible.

All this looks like a lot, but it's what I did in a space of a year. Now our IQ might differ, but dedication and commitment can be the same.

When you do no 7, follow this site to apply for jobs. 2 months after your projects and you'd get a remote pay of $1000 minimum from Poland.
