1. Nigerian Sex Workers Association (NSWA): The Nigeria Sex Workers Association (NSWA, also known as Precious Jewels) is an umbrella network of community-based sex workers organisations. NSWA is a non-governmental, not-for-profit  organisation focusing on health, and social and human rights of sex workers. NSWA is registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) of Nigeria.

“The Association was founded to see a Nigeria where sex work is recognised as work, violence and discrimination against sex workers is eliminated, and the health, social and human rights of sex workers are respected and not violated,” said Amaka, National Leader of the NSWA.

‘‘NSWA’s mission is to empower and strengthen the voices of sex workers, advocate for their health, social and human rights including those living with HIV and those using drugs, through collaborations, networking and partnerships. [We aim to] uplift the status of sex workers through [raising] awareness of their social, health and human rights, promotion of healthy living, prevention of diseases through advocacy, education, research, information, quality service delivery for improved livelihood and empowerment’’.

What are the priority areas NSWA works in?

NSWA believes in its right to work and advocate for the rights of sex workers, and runs programmes that empower sex workers to speak with one voice in Nigeria. NSWA opposes the criminalisation and other legal oppression of sex work and supports its recognition as work.

8. National association of Nigerian Prostitutes (NANP): The National Association of Nigerian Prostitutes (NANP) is a professional organization based in Nigeria to assist adult sex workers. The organization was formed out of opposition to the country's prostitution laws which criminalize sex work and all of its related activities. NANP campaigns for equal access to healthcare, a safe work environment and protection from abuse and exploitation. It is headed by a president who is elected by association members every 12 months. The current president and secretary general are Tamar Tion and Sandra Efosa respectively.


9. International Union Of Sex Workers (IUSW): The International Union of Sex Workers(IUSW) is a United Kingdom-based trade union for sex workers. It campaigns for the decriminalisation of prostitution, and to have sex work acknowledged as viable labour. In 2002, members voted to affiliate with the GMB, a general workers union. The union now has official recognition as the sex industry branch of the GMB. Some of the services offered by the union include: self-defenceclasses, free legal advice and training for members who wish to leave the sex industry. The union was formed in 2000 partly as a response to actions taken by Westminster City Council in London to try to remove prostitutes from the area.

They are a member of Backlash, a pressure group formed in 2005 in order to oppose a new law criminalising possession of "extreme pornography".


10. African Sex Workers Alliance (ASWA): African Sex Workers Alliance (ASWA) is a pan African alliance of sex worker led groups which aims to improve the health and human rights of female, male, and transgender sex workers. ASWA was formed in 2009 and is based in Nairobi, Kenya. ASWA is made up of over 150 sex workers led organizations and member organisations exist in many African countries.


11. United Sex Workers (USW): United Sex Workers (USW) is a branch of strippers and sex workers in the UK, organising with UVW for better working conditions and fighting to change the industry from within.


12. World Association of Sexual Health (WAS): The World Association for Sexual Health(WAS) is an international umbrella organization representing sexological societies and sexologists worldwide.
Founded in 1978 in Rome, Italy, the WAS main goal is to promote sexual health for all through sexological science. Since its beginning, the WAS has successfully sponsored 19 international congresses, the last one being held in Gothenburg, Sweden, from June 21 to June 25, 2009. The WAS was previously named World Association for Sexology, but changed its name in order to stress that sexology is a tool for achieving sexual health.

Member societies

Five prominent Regional Continental Federations are members of the WAS: The Asia and Oceania Federation of Sexology (AOFS), the European Federation of Sexology (EFS), the Latin American Federation of Sexology and Sexual Education (FLASSES), the North American Federation of Sexuality Organizations (NAFSO), and the African Federation for Sexual Health and Rights (AFSHR).

WAS members also include more than 100 national and international sexological organizations, institutes and foundations.
