100k Job On The Mainland Vs 150k Job On Island. Please Help!!! by Profmetoo: 8:05am On Jun 25, 2022
Good morning guys

So I currently work with one of the top commercial banks and I was posted to one of their branches on the mainland very close to my place of residence. So I incur close to zero cost of transportation, no traffic issue, no stress. And the salary is 100k, no promotion in sight, career growth is uncertain and the role isn't really great for my CV. I'm a teller.

Last week I did an interview via zoom because of the nature of my work and I got another job, but on the island. It's a private equity firm and the pay is 150k. The cost of transportation for the month is about 20k. There's great career growth and opportunities for self development. However, I fear the stress of going to the island and back daily. Waking up as early as 4am sometimes and coming back home late.

Please advise me on which to choose. I have till Monday to decide.

Those working on the island and staying on the mainland, how do you cope?

Thank you.

Transportation is crazy in Lagos, that's if you don't have your personal car or a company staff bus. That being said, carrer growth is important for you.

You can weigh the both and see which will be okay for you in the long run.

If you live around surulere, gbagada and yaba, you can take up the island job. If not forget it, and don’t think about moving to the island for a 150k a month job either, the traffic situation is gonna give you hell literally

Teller job na waste of one's life and youth.

Also commuting to the Island from Mainland na die these days. Even People living in Lekki Phase 2 downwards are complaining.

You might consider getting a room at Iyana Oworo. That should make life a bit easier for you.

When he already has a place to stay on the mainland already, relocating isn't a good idea.

I will advise he takes the job on the island, alot of people are doing it, So he could definitely do it as well, but if you are not after the money but prefer your comfort, then continue your current job.

Paying 20k on transport fare in a month means the distance from your house to island is not much and traffic jam will be minimized. Since there is career growth in the private firm i will advice you to go for it on the long run it would yield positively for you.

So you'd rather keep your teller job without any prospect of growth in the next 10 years than pursue a promising career that would see you probably rise to a manager within 5 years because of perceived stress?

Don't allow the little side monies you get from the teller role make y9u get too comfortable, it's not s real job. You shouldn't be complaining of stress when you are in your 20s, put in the work now so that you would get comfortable before 30, cos na that time strees go start to dey tell for body.

Moreover, what's d guarantee that the bank won't move you to a more distant branch?

Unless that PE firm works hybrid na die o. You should also factor in the occasional long hours that would come with this new job.

PS: I work in a similar organization, so this is what I have experienced.
