Chukwuemeka Emmanuel Chigozie (The Real Supi), who is a native of Umudunu in Awka-Etiti, Anambra state, Nigeria has shared an amazing way to know the four market days in Igbo land without the calendar in a mathematical way.

Emmanuel a former Pharmacist at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi, Anambra State, Nigeria, former Chief Pharmacist at Cottage Hospital Otuabagi Ogbia LGA Bayelsa State, Nigeria, and now Superintendent Pharmacist at Emma Enwere Pharmacy, Ekwulobia, Anambra State.

He however has wowed many over the past years and now he came out with another discovery he made relating relating the every day live of the Igbos to mathematics, while living up to his favorite quote which states that; “What you cannot do can only be confirmed when you have tried and failed to do it. The more you try the more your BEST is done.

See his solving’s and explanations below to know how it is possible.

The 4 market days are Orie, Afor, Nkwo and Eke.

For example; What market day is 21st March, 2022?

To begin, you need to understand the formula below;

A + B + C + D = F

Where;

A = the last two digits of the year. [in our example above, A = 22].

B = the quotient got after diving A by 4. Here, discard any decimal and use only the whole number. [in our example, B = 5. This is got by dividing 22 with 4]. The reason why we divide the last two digits of the year by 4 is because Leap year comes every 4 years.

C = The date whose market day you are determining. [in our example, C = 21].

D = The code for the month in which the date appears. See the codes for all the months below. [in our example, D = 2. The code for March is 2]

F = The sum of A, B, C and D. [in our example, F = A + B + C + D which implies that F = 22 + 5 + 21 + 2. When you add all, F = 50]

The last step is to divide F by 4. This is because we have 4 market days. When you divide the F by 4, you will get an answer similar to x.y, where x is the whole number part and y is the code for the market day. See also the codes for the market days below. [in our example, F ÷ 4 implies 50 ÷ 4. When you divide 50 by 4 you will get 12.5].

Therefore, y is .5 and .5 is the code for Nkwo.

Thus, 21st March, 2022 is Nkwo.

THE MONTHS CODES FOR YEARS BETWEEN 2000 – 2099

JAN – 3

FEB – 2

MAR – 2

APR – 1

MAY – 3

JUN – 2

JUL – 0

AUG – 3

SEP – 2

OCT – 0

NOV – 3

DEC – 1

To get the months codes for years between 1900 – 1999, subtract 1 from the months codes above

MONTHS CODES FOR YEARS BETWEEN 1900 – 1999

JAN – 2

FEB – 1

MAR – 1

APR – 0

MAY – 2

JUN – 1

JUL – [-1]

AUG – 2

SEP – 1

OCT – [-1]

NOV – 2

DEC – 0

THE CODES FOR THE MARKET DAYS

ORIE – .0 [or remainder 0]

AFOR – .25 [or remainder 1]

NKWO – .5 [or remainder 2]

EKE – .75 [or remainder 3]

Before you solve for January and February, please, read the NOTE below after the Example 4.

Example 2: What market day is 15th August, 2017?

A = 17

B = 4 [17÷4 then discard the decimal part]

C = 15 [the date]

D = 3 [code for August for 20’s]

Thus, F = A + B + C + D

F = 17 + 4 + 15 + 3

F = 39

Divide F by 4

F÷4 = 39÷4

And F = 9.75

Therefore y = .75

And .75 is the code for Eke.

Therefore, 15th August, 2017 is Eke.

Example 3: What market day is 29th July 1991?

A = 91

B = 22 [91÷4 and discard the decimal part]

C = 29 [the date]

D = -1 [code for July for 19’s]

F = A + B + C + D

F = 91 + 22 + 29 + [-1]

F = 141

Divide F by 4

F÷4 = 141÷4

F = 35.25

Thus, y = .25 which is Afor.

Example 4: What market day is 28th March, 1986?

A = 86

B = 21

C = 28

D = 1

F = 86 + 21 + 28 + 1

F = 136

F÷4 = 136÷4

F = 34.0

Thus, y = .0 which is Orie.

Anytime there is no decimal after dividing by 4 it means that y = .0 and that means Orie.

NOTE

Always subtract 1 from January and February codes (ONLY January and February) if the year is a leap year. For other months of the leap year, use their normal codes.

It is a leap year if there is no decimal or remainder after dividing the last two digits of the year by 4.

Example 5: What market day is 3rd January, 2020?

A = 20

B = 5 [20÷4=5. There is no decimal, therefore, 2020 is a leap year]

C = 3 [the date]

D = 3-1=2 [we will use 2 instead of 3 for January because 2020 is a leap year].

F = 20 + 5 + 3 + 2

F = 30

F÷4 = 30÷4

F = 7.5

Thus, y = .5 which Is Nkwo.

Example 6: What market day is 1st February, 1996?

A = 96

B = 24 [96÷4=24. There is no decimal and so 1996 is a leap year].

C = 1

D = 1-1=0 [we will use 0 instead of 1 for February because it is a leap year]

F = 96 + 24 + 1 + 0

F = 121

F÷4 = 121÷4

F = 30.25

Thus, y = .25 which is Afor.
