Bonds Vs Fixed Term Deposits by MagnusX(m): 10:32am On Jul 12, 2022 |
Do bonds offer better returns than fixed term deposits (FTD)? Sovereign bonds offer about 12% while corporate bonds offer about 14% for a 10 year term. FTDs of commercial banks are as low as 1.5%, with the highest I've seen being 6% per annum for a 3 year lock, Sterling bank. Some fund managers offer FTDs giving returns of 6 - 10% per annum like meristem, zedcrest etc Microfinance banks (MFB) offer better returns on FTDs if you have the patience to shop around since we have about 900 of them in Nigeria. Some MFBs give 15% per annum and offer more if you lock for more than a year. Larger and older MFBs offer less, about 10 - 12%. Bonds require a large investment capital to begin as most brokers will ask for capital of 100k upwards for each bond you wish to buy. Shorter lerm bonds offer lesser returns with commercial papers and treasury bills giving less than 7.5% and savings bonds of 2 to 3 years offer less than 10%. Mortgage banks offer returns less than 10% but better than commercial banks. I'm developing a portfolio of FTDs of MFBs to give me a return of 25% per annum. This portfolio is also meant to adjust for the default risk associated with MFBs being smaller and less liquid than commercial banks, mortgage banks and fund managers. What do you guys think? Is it possible? |
