• ASUU alleges blackmail
A professor in the Nigerian university system will earn N2 million monthly salary, if the Federal Government accepts the recommendations of its committee on the 2009 agreements with university-based unions.

The committee also recommended varied yearly allowances for professors. The allowances are for postgraduate supervision, field trip, responsibility and hazard, examination/timekeeper and teaching practice/industrial supervision.

Others are honoraria for post-graduate thesis (oral exam), external modulation programmes for undergraduate/post-graduate students, external assessment of readers and postgraduate study grants.

The details are contained in a draft proposal of the renegotiated 2009 agreement submitted to the Presidential Committee on Salaries and Wages by Prof Nimi Briggs, chairman of the Renegotiation Committee of the 2009 pacts.

The Nation sighted the proposal in Abuja yesterday.

Briggs said: “All the documents have been submitted to the Minister of Education (Alhaji Adamu Adamu).”

Asked to confirm the recommendations, ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke said: ” Quoting figures in a document that has not been signed is against the tenets of collective bargaining agreement.

“Anybody who gave out those figures is breaching all the rules about collective bargaining. “Until the draft agreement is signed, we cannot release the figures.

"If the government has a problem with the figures, they should come back to us. You don’t blackmail people during negotiation. You don’t go to the public to churn out fake figures during negotiations."

“If you have a problem with what your committee negotiated, you come back to the table and renegotiate it"

“And that is why the committee went back to the government to say give us permission to sign or raise issues if you have. If you have issues you come back to the committee and not go to the public."

“If the committee has finished its work and submitted its report to the government, why are they coming with blackmail? It is against all tenets of negotiations.”

It was however learnt that the Briggs Committee has been mandated to go back to the drawing board to produce a “reasonable, practicable wage increase, which will reflect relativity of every worker in the educational sector – academic and non-academic.”

A ministry source had accused the committee of proposing an impracticable increase in the university wage structure.

The source also said that the committee was impartial as it raised the pay and allowances of university teachers by 180 per cent while adding only 10 per cent to those of the non-teaching members of staff.

Ngige had in a statement on Wednesday accused the committee of excluding the relevant advisory government arms like the Ministries of Finance, Education, Labour and Employment, Budget Office of the Federation, Office of the Head of Service of the Federation, National Salaries Income and Wages Commission from the sittings of the committee.

He argued that their “exclusion from the sittings of Prof. Nimi Briggs easily explains its non-inclusive and one-sided proposal, recommending sky-high, impracticable figures in salaries and allowances that are clearly beyond the capacity of the Federal Government.”

The Nation gathered that the Presidential Committee on Salaries has taken a decision for a holistic, all-encompassing and integrated review of the salaries and allowances of the entire educational sector – universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

*MODIFIED*

2,000,000 monthly grin

As at 2019, Nigeria had about 11,877 professors (though this include both those on private and public higher institutions).

That means; monthly, the government will pay 2,000,000 x 11,877 = 23,754,000,000. That's over twenty three billion naira monthly.

As at today, Nigeria produces about 1.2m BPD of crude oil (Our main source of income, excluding mineral resources from the north which I don't know why they don't mention it. Only God knows where that money is going to). Using the official exchange rate of about 414 naira/dollar,
If 1 barrel is about 93 dollars, this becomes 1,200,000 x 93$ = 111,600,000 per day

that's a total income of 111,600,000 x 414 = 46,202,400,000 (Nigeria's income from crude oil).

THEN; 46,202,400,000 x 30 days = 1,386,072,000,000. This is over 1.3 Trillion naira monthly.

Boy o boy, This country is making money.

SUMMARILY, THE GOVERNMENT CAN PAY ASUU COMFORTABLY.

I promise you that Obi will implement 3Million per month for all professor if we can support him. That's why they have started having sleepless night because of Obi and Obidient people. You think it's a child play for Afenifere to declare for Obi, you think it's a child play for Simon Ekpa to stop sit at home and become Obidient, you think Mazi Nnamdi Kanu didn't see the future to have commanded all Nigerian youth for Obi. At the mention of LP, other parties become jittery. Enough is enough, all old cargos and drug barons must retire from politics by fire by force.

If senators are earning twenties to thirties of millions, then why not?

1 million is a fair price for a professor.

You people need to start paying the masses fair wages so that you know there is no much remaining to loot.

Maybe you will curb corruption and reduce cost of governance then. The whole labour force should ideally go on strike and demand a fair living wage.

Thank God it was the federal government committee that made the recommendation and not ASUU demanding for 2 million. Am not sure our government value our education that much to want to Pay a prof. Over $3000 per month.

Am sure salary and payment issue were not the only thing in the report. They should stop making it look as though salary and allowances are the only thing ASUU is fighting for there are other issues as well.

If some of the terms on that report is not workable what happens to renegotiating and working out the workable ones?

Summarily : Our leaders are not yet ready to upgrade our education system.
Hopefully Nigerians make the right choice next election.

Using moderate estimates, The average salary of a college professor in America is about N4 million naira monthly plus or minus (using N500 to $1)

The average cost of a 2 bedroom apartment in America is about N7 million annually, while the average cost in Nigeria (Lagos mainland) is about N700,000 annually

So based on this very simple comparison, why does a college professor in Nigeria want to earn half the salary of an American college professor when his expenses and standard of living are over 10x less?

Well, a Prof. in Ghana earns close to a million a month. N2M won't be bad for a Prof in a country that prides itself as "Giant of Africa". Besides, a Prof. in an average Western University earns around N5m monthly without the stress Nigerian Lecturers have to go through. So, compare that with a Profs sub 500k total take home pay and see how low we are.

That said, this report is either a product of Mushroom, or malicious journalism. Ngige, in his vituperations claimed the lecturers jacked up their salaries by about 180%. No Prof currently earns up to N500k as total take home from CONUASS. How much is 180% of 500k? The actual amount will be slightly below 900k per month. How the olodo journalist got to 2M which is like 4.5times the current pay is quite funny.

While this argument is going on, Buhari is releasing 400bn for useless tradermoni. The reason Ngige has been playing with this whole thing is cos he knows Buhari will do nothing to him or anyone from the FG team for that matter.
TRULY, BUHARI IS A MISHAP.

I don't think 2m is too much for a professor. It takes alot of mental, social, psychological and financial commitment and fortitude to become a professor. Some political appointees and elected office holders earn more while contributing little or nothing to our economic growth. Education is the major driver of economic prosperity and development . As such, our academia deserves to be well renumerated.

If this proposal is accepted by the FG, appropriate internal & external mechanisms should be put in place to ensure it is not abused and that professorol racketeering doesn't emerge in any shape or form.

If Nigeria can pay that #2m per month, it will really encourage our best brains to go into lecturing. Unfortunately, the government doesn't value education in this part of the world.

On the flip side, if the government agrees to pay, the biggest challenge will be sourcing the funds. Nigerians haven't been voting for leaders who know how to create wealth at federal level.

TBH, I don't see Buhari - who lacks wealth creation ideas and skills - approving this salary structure, unless he wants to keep borrowing to pay salaries.

Anyone who lacks finance management and wealth creation ideas has no business being a Nigerian president at this time. That's why Nigeria desperately needs Peter Obi to save this sinking ship.

FG have put ASUU in a defensive mode.

ASUU may now be exposed as a bunch of greedy jobbers seeking to earn so much for doing so little.

It will be interesting to see how this whole game plays out.

Nigeria cannot afford it.
Before you crucify me, know that wages of other staff will be adjusted to similar amounts too. And other fields like medical/allied health will fight for something in that range.
Let's not compare first world countries either, we have a GDP per Capita of $2000 unlike those with north of $20,000-$50,000 GDP per Capita.
