I am currently running an MBA at University of Leicester via distance learning. And, man, is this challenging or what?! From the very first module of the program, I experienced something about learning I never did through out my primary, secondary and university days in Nigeria. It's no wonder why many multi-national companies (including mine) favour international degrees to our local ones - I had always thought it was the slave mentality thing. But no, it's not.
All the modules have been very insightful so far (I'm currently on the 8th module of 10 in all) but I have found Business Ethics in a Global Context most interesting because of it's global view and comparisons about what constitutes ethical behaviour in business.
All things being equal I should be done by December this year.

Mine is at OAU, Ife. Quite challenging but it's worth it . My specialty is is Finance Management because I am a qualified accountant therefore I do not see more sense in crossing to something else.

wow! This thread has turned into something else overnight. The MBA is a good investment. It exposes one to different aspects of the business world. Prior to my MBA, i used to to view the organisation as something mystical. But the MBA has changed my business mindset. I think and generate business ideas almost every day. I will be rounding off by December, hoping to pick up any available job even before then. It's been a rewarding experience so far.cheers!

many universities offer a straight MBA while others offer specialization . i am a bit sceptical of this specialization since an MBA ,,by definition is a general management degree and i wonder how many modules /hours are spent on this specialist area apart from writing a thesis perhaps

I know at devry as high as 6 and as low as 4 modules while 10 modules are dedicated for the biz admin package,
Re: MBA Students: Let's Meet Here by gboye1999: 8:46pm On Aug 15, 2011
Chriswely,

Getting educated in Devry Univ is not easy ooo! took  the Post Grad modules in wireless communications and that did cost quite a sum. Well considering an MBA after geeting my PMI in a different university altogether,

@ texbiano,
hows the course content at Leicester like? could you gibe a brief about the programme and the cost?
Re: MBA Students: Let's Meet Here by chriswely: 8:52pm On Aug 15, 2011
I possess an MSc in Project Management from Salford University, UK, so an MBA so be fun, i definately do not want it to be easy,

which can happen in many other generic MBAs.people tend to choose elective modules / courses that reflect their background e.g. HR, Finance, project management ,operations etc.
i think the specialization claim is misleading and there is no significant difference .

Greeting to you'll my fellow. MBA, very lovely especially with reviewing different companies as to why/how they failed/succeeded. The experience years back was lovely. They best I could tell anyone with or still pursuing his MBA is, thinking about starting/opening your own business when you are done. Start small and then gradually grow big. I'm sure everyone will attest to the fact that most of the companies we reviewed while studying for the MBA started small and later grew big. Peace and success to everyone of us.

X-factoria:

Hi deenee,

Thanks for sharing your experience. I am a prospective MBA student and I'm currently working on my applications to some MBA programs in the US. My GMAT score isn't fantastic - I scored 610 and I'm even looking at taking a break from work to attempt it again so maybe I can improve on my score before the first round of application closes in October/November. I have had 5years financial services experience but my undergrad was in engineering.

Please which of the Ivy-League MBA programs did you attend? What was your GMAT score and what did you think help your application stand out? Will appreciate if I get a feedback from you. Thanks.

Thank you, I attended Dartmouth University—Tuck School of Business. The application process is very rigorous and I recall spending about  'eternity'  on mine (you have to apply electronically).

Enclosed with below is a brief outline of the admission requirements-First degree; work experience; GMAT; TOEFL; 2 references; 4 essays; laptop

For the GMAT, 610 is a good start but am afraid you would have to score higher than that to be within a 'reasonable margin of safety'.  There is no cut of for the GMAT score per say. What they do is that, they use what is called a  'cumulative moving average' and use mean of  the lowest and highest range of  scores as the cut off mark. So the cut off  used for a particular year is a reflection of the cumulative GMAT scores for that year(i.e high scores , high cut off and vice versa).

I cannot say if this applies to other schools. You can follow the link posted below if you are interested in first information about the top 100 business schools. Also, I wrote 4 essays and had to send two references(academic and professional). For my GMAT , I scored 675 whilst the average GMAT score for my cohort was 670. I just checked the average GMAT score for my school and it is currently above 700 so it keeps increasing every year!

I am sure there are some equally good schools that will accept slightly lower GMAT scores but as earlier mentioned , I would suggest a high score just to be safe. At this point, let me also note that the GMAT alone is not the only prerequisite used during the selection. I have seen people that had below average GMAT scores  but  with extensive managerial experience and they were accepted. Basically it is more of a 'balancing act' because they treat each application on a case by case basis.

Five years experience in financial services is good start. I only had four before I decided to enroll for the MBA. Your first degree in engineering is also an added advantage because most schools in the USA give preference to applicants that come from a diverse background. In terms of funding, the fees are on the high side when compared to what is obtainable  in the UK but they will give you VALUE FOR MONEY!-no doubt. If you are lucky you can also make some extra money (just to cover living expenses)during the summer holiday working part time but you will not be able to do that when school  is in session.

I also recommend that you look up other funding options available when you have finally decided which school you want to apply to, this will help a lot especially if you are self funded (if you are  lucky, you could get up to 25-50% part funding that will cover tuition fees). Even at that, you might still have to spend a lot because average tuition fees is about $45,000 for most two year full time courses and about $10,000 per year for living expenses.  Hope this helps

Cheers!

I am running my MBA in small business ventures and entrepreneurship with delta state university. Most of our lecturers are professors. It is an 18months program of 4 semesters/2 sessions. Tuitions for the entire program is a little less than N200k. Minimum requirement for admission is Bsc 2nd class lower, HND upper credit, NYSC DISCHARGE CERT. Next intake is november2011. I also like to ask if i am eligible for phD (not DBA) without an Msc?? If yes! Plz recommend schools for me both local and int'l(local prefereably). I love this thread. Keep it lively guys. Love u all

True talk bro, but this only applies to most UK business schools that offer one year courses, with the exception of London business School of course whose MBA is for 21 months.

In the US, the traditional Full time MBA is two full years and the module structure is divided thus; one year for the students to be familiar with the general management modules and in the second year, you concentrate solely on your chosen area of core specialism.

I do agree that even one year is not enough but at least it lays a good foundation and helps to demystify the difficulties that most contemporary managers encounter whilst trying to link 'theory to practice'

@gboye_1999,
The Leicester MBA comprises 10 modules: 7 core modules, 2 electives and the dissertation. There are four exams (which are conducted at the British Council) and 5 assignments, before the dissertation. Also, the school gives you the option to specialize in any of the following areas: Marketing, Finance, HR, IT Management and Quality Management. I have chosen a specialism in IT Management.

I started the course in August 2009 and it cost me about 8,000 Pounds. I am not aware of any price changes.

I am not an expert in your area but I am certain that someone on this forum can proffer some advice on the "viability" of doing an MSc in Economics coming from a background in Accounting. What I can however tell you is that you may not be able to do an MBA straight away after your first degree. Most schools would require that you have some level of working experience first.

Just started mine last month at the Warwick Business School via distance learning, very eye-opening so far. The major challenge right now is having to learn and study alone, no one to discuss with sad . There's an online discussion group, but so far haven't tried it yet. undecided

It is quite rare to see people move from accounting to economics. It has always been the other way round. However, it all depends on passion and one's career objectives. what do you want to do thereafter, work as an economist or accountant? So, you have to spell that out before you enroll for the program. My humble self studied economics, but i have interest in so many things, including accounting, finance, project mgt, strategic mgt, supply chain etc. After my MBA, i hope to enroll in a Masters degree program in Economics (part-time) and do a few professional qualifications alongside. So, it depends on your interest and career goals.

Regarding the MBA. It will be difficult for schools like UI to accept you in their MBA program. But, a course-mate of mine told me that she was accepted into unliag MBA even without work experience. I am unable to confirm the veracity of her claims since i am currently not in Nigeria. In the UK, most universities accept students/recent graduates without work experience into their MBA program. But most top schools will not accept you.
