In 1993, no one cared about religion...even though we were divided then, and people were lisiting religious beliefs of IBB's candidate to show he was promuslim or something

At the time, Abiola's party SDP was seen as favourable to the South, to the christians, and to the Labour unions...compared to NRC which was seen as being a Northern party. So, CAN and company were supporting SDP and were ready to overlook Abiola's pro-Muslim comments of 6 years previously.

Also, everyone wanted the army out of power, including elements in the army themselves. ALL our neighbours were tranisitioning, or had transitioned to civllian rule. We were still run by uniformed men. We had already had one attempt to bring a civilian government truncated. We did not want it again.

It was the annulment of the result, and Abacha taking advantage of the confusion that resulted to eventually seize power that led to the end of that period of democracy...
