Africa's top oil and gas producer and exporter, Nigeria, is the new focus of attention by European powers desperately seeking to wean themselves off dependence on Russian gas, following the latter's invasion of Ukraine.

EU To Replace Gas from Russia with Nigeria

The European Union (EU) Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS said on Friday that, it would replace the gas from Russia with Nigerian Gas due to the invasion in Ukraine.

The Deputy Director-General Department for (Energy), European Commission in Brussels, Mr Matthew Baldwin, said this at a news conference on Friday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Baldwin will be meeting with Nigerian top government officials and private sector players, including key stakeholders in the country’s Energy Sector.

NAN reports that the EU’s executive body had urged member states to slash their gas consumption by 15 per cent as it warned that a complete shutdown of Russian supplies was “likely”.

The EU has been scrambling to wean itself off Russian gas since the invasion of Ukraine, but is alarmed about a potential energy crisis this winter.

“In summary, I am on a mission from Europe to try to deliver Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) today in the context of NLG partnership tomorrow with Nigeria.

“Europe is in a tight spot in relation to gas, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the instability in our gas market, and the threat of cutting off supply altogether.

“So, we have launched the energy platform task force and the primary goal is to reach out to our reliable partners such as Nigeria to replace the gas from Russia with gas from reliable partners, like Nigeria.” he said.

“To be clear, we need to manage the supply side and that’s why we want to expand what is currently at 14 per cent shares of our total LNG import from Nigeria and we want it to go up.

“Our gas percentage was 60 per cent but now we want to go,’’ he said.

He added that Nigerian products had an extraordinary potential and that was why EU wanted to expand the short-term delivery.

Also, he said that by the end of August this year EU hopefully to kick start the partnership, adding that, it would create a long term partnership with Nigeria.

Speaking also, Ms Samuela Isopi, the EU delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, said that the bloc was doing its part in contributing to the energy sector through different collaborations with Nigerian Government.

She said that currently, EU’s contribution stands at 400 million euros. The EU as a bloc remains Nigeria’s biggest trading partner accounting for more than 20 per cent of Nigerian trade with the world.

In 2021 the volume of EU-Nigeria trade stood at 28.7 billion euros (an increase of more than 25 per cent over 2020) with a trade balance of 6.4 billion euros in favour of Nigeria.

Most of Nigerias Gas deposits are around Imo, Abia Anambra and now Enugu. Is God not wonderful? Buhari is strategizing to use South Easternngas to buy over the west at thee expense of the same East! It won't fly.. Gas from Igbo land will NEVER be used to save Nigeria.
The EU delegation should go and discuss with real Igbo leaders and not with the federal Nigeria appointed proxies.

The utterly corrupt Nigerian government has misused trillions of dollars worth of Oil incomes for over half a century now. Oil is running out as the main demand in the international market and these guys want to pivot to gas to continue the maximum looting from where they stopped.
We will not agree..

Gas in Nigeria will flow freely when it's being used to improve the living standards of the real owners and not when it's being used to inflate the pockets of the fulani oligarchs and their agbadorian cousins..
They have already passed all sorts of Evil and dubious legislations to loot these resources. So folks must agitate to no end until the right thing is done..

Unfortunately, the poor masses won't see the benefits.
More money for the thieving politicians.
I'm sure that's why Tinubu is fighting hard to be the president.

This attitude shows the difference between FAILURES and SUCCESSES.

Failures' attitude is the same as yours.

Successful people think, ''where is FG investment going to be going into with the new funds coming in?'', and then position themselves to capitalise on the new budgetary allocations to the relevant sectors.

FAILURES sit down in their backyard and wait for the money to arrive at their front door, ''for the masses'', failing which it means the leaders have ''ate the money''.

SUCCESSES go out there and GET theirs.

Selling gas to the most developed economies require alot of infrastructures to be in place.
Selling gas to Germany is different from selling gas to India. Sadly Nigeria with an annual budget of less than 40 billion dollars does not have these infrastructures ready.
And time is a luxury that the EU does not have.

Re: EU Looks To Nigeria For Gas To Replace Russian Supplies by SmartPolician: 3:36am On Jul 23, 2022
Buhari should reach a deal with the interested European countries to provide the necessary funds for harnessing the gas. Nigeria can repay a non-interest, long-term loan when those gas facilities start production.

Gas companies from those countries should deploy the infrastructure needed to harness the gas and Nigeria will start repaying the loan bit by bit until we finish paying for everything.

BTW, the local communities must be trained to have key jobs in the companies and they must be adequately financially compensated to avert communal restiveness.

Extracting gas is not rocket science, mumu. It is the transportation of it that involves logistical issues, and raises costs, and the EU will clearly be subsidising those costs significantly if they want the gas.
Of cause it is not,
So uncle can you tell us the breakdown of time and cost it required to setup NLNG in River state and the reason why that at Olokola never see the light of the day till date.

.........Expenditure greater than revenue......

.........Debt ratio greater than GDP.................

Reason. Chunk of the money mostly end up in the pocket of abokis up north.
