Greedy’ London fraudster jailed for three years 25 July 2011 16:17
A London woman has been jailed for a total of three years for tax evasion, tax credit fraud and money laundering offences following an investigation by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and the Metropolitan Police.
Investigators discovered that Joy Agwuegbo failed to declare £167,000 received from renting out five properties in South East London and that she fraudulently claimed £101,000 in tax credits. Agwuegbo also ran an illegal money lending business with Cosmas Anyakudo, committing money laundering offences in excess of £800,000.

Cosmas Anyakudo was sentenced to twelve months imprisonment, suspended for two years. He was given a twelve month supervision order and must carry out 160 hours of community work.

Graham Ranson, Assistant Director, Criminal Investigation for HMRC said:

“HMRC’s Criminal Taxes Unit worked with Newham CID to investigate and successfully prosecute Agwuegbo and Anyakudo. We will now look to reclaim the proceeds of their criminal activities. HMRC is cracking down on fraud and the Government has made a further £900 million available to us to tackle evasion, avoidance and attacks by criminals. I urge anyone with information relating to this type of crime to call the Tax Evasion Hotline on 0800 788 887 or via the website www.hmrc.gov.uk/tax-evasion.

Upon sentencing, Her Honour Judge Wright said that Agwuegbo was ‘greedy and told lies over many years’.

Background

The court heard that between 2003 and 2009 Agwuegbo fraudulently claimed £21,000 a year tax credits by stating her income was between £8,000 and £9,000 per year, but HMRC investigations proved her actual annual income was in excess of £50,000. In addition, she failed to declare her true income for income tax purposes and ran an unlicensed money lending business with Anyakudo. He would arrange loans for people charging them high interest rates on short term loans and Agwuegbo provided the funds.

Agwuegbo used some of the proceeds of the crimes to purchase properties in South East London, four of which she bought in 2006. She rented these properties out and failed to declare this additional income. It is believed her properties are worth approximately £1m.

Both were arrested on 27 April 2009 and charged on 1 March 2010. Cosmas Anyakudo pleaded guilty to the charges on 06 August 2010 and Joy Agwuegbo pleaded guilty on 16 May 2011.

Confiscation proceedings are taking place.
