Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Rivers, Katsina top 31 other states

The total number of registered voters in Nigeria may have risen from 84 million to 96.2 million, The PUNCH has learnt.

This is according to the latest voter statistics released by the Independent National Electoral Commission which states that 12.2 million voters registered in the Continuous voter registration that ended on Sunday.

According to INEC, the North-West geopolitical zone, which comprises the seven states of Sokoto, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi and Jigawa, with a total of 22.67 million registered voters, has the highest number of registered voters.

As of the 2019 elections, the North-West had 20.15 million voters. However, the latest report released by INEC showed that 2.5 million new voters registered during the recently concluded continuous voter registration, bringing the total number of registered voters in the zone to 22.67 million.

The South-West, which earlier had 16.29 million registered voters, now has 18.3 million, having added 2, 039, 982 new registered voters. The zone comprises Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Ekiti and Ondo.

In third position is the South-South which comprises Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Cross River, Bayelsa, Edo and Delta states. The number of registered voters in the zone has risen from 12.8 million to 15.2 million.

The North-Central which is made up of Nasarawa, Kogi, Benue, Niger, Kwara and Plateau, now has 14.1 million voters while the North-East which is made up of Yobe, Borno, Taraba, Adamawa, Bauchi and Gombe, added 1.5 million new voters to reach 12.8 million registered voters.

The South-East, which is the smallest geopolitical zone, and consists of five states – Ebonyi, Enugu, Abia, Anambra and Imo – now has 11.49 million voters while the number of registered voters in the Federal Capital Territory has increased from 1.3 million to 1.5 million.

Lagos maintained its position as the state with the highest number of registered voters, increasing its figure from 6.5 million to 7.1 million. Kano State also maintained its second position, adding 569, 103 new voters to increase its number to 6.02 million.

Kaduna State now has 4.4 million registered voters while Rivers State has now overtaken Katsina as the fourth largest state in terms of voters. While Rivers now has 3.68 million voters, Katsina has 3.57 million.

Some other states with a sizeable number of registered voters are Delta (3.3 million) and Oyo (3.3 million) Also, Ekiti retained its position as the state with the lowest number of registered voters despite rising from 909, 967 registered voters to 1, 034, 911.

A breakdown of INEC’s report also showed that about 71 per cent of the newly registered voters are youths. Of the 12.2 million newly registered voters, about 8.7 million are between the ages of 18 and 34 while about 2.4 million are between ages 35 and 49. Those between ages 50 and 69 are about 856, 017 while about 127, 541 are over 70.

The statistics also showed that more women registered during the latest CVR than men. While 6,224,866 are women, 6,074,078 are men.

Speaking at the post-election training audit for the governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun in Abuja on Monday, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Board of The Electoral Institute, Prof. Abdullahi Zuru, said youths and women constituted the majority of voters.

A political analyst, Dr Busari Dauda, said the new composition of registered voters could determine the winner of the presidential election.

He also said this was a signpost that youths were ready to stop recycling old leaders.

Dauda said, “It is not strange. I think we have people who have matured to 18 years and are ready to exercise their franchise. It portends a positive outcome for the country. It is also a signal that in the subsequent general elections, they would decide who they want as leaders in the country as well take over the affairs of the country at the national level and the recycling will stop and someone much younger will one day become the president.

Also in a chat with one of our correspondents, analyst Dare Atoye-Ariyo, who is also the Convener, Coalition in Defence of Nigerian Democracy and Constitution, said the recently concluded Osun State election which led to defeat of an incumbent governor, is evidence that youths are now transforming their online enthusiasm to votes.

“And that’s exactly what we saw in the Osun State governorship elections, ahead of the 2023 elections, there is a possibility that a good number of the new people who have registered this time around are going to vote,” he said.

Atoye-Ariyo added that the fact that the newly registered voters were mostly youths signaled a reawakening.

From what I can see up there, Peter Obi will win this election.

It's not because of regional votes or any other demographics, the people are tired of being hungry and unemployed, with insecurity plaguing their lives. 84 million voters cannot make the mistake of voting for failures like those being paraded by PDP and APC.

North West 22.67 million voters

North East 12.8 million voters

North Central 14.1 million voters

South West 18.3 million voters

South East 11.49 million voters

South South 15.2 million voters

Don't give any idiot opportunity to tell you South East( Ndigbo) doesn't have significant population.

For certain more than 98% of 11.49 million of the registerd voters in South East are nothing but Ndigbo; People of other ethnic groups don't like staying or living in South East.

More than 30% percent South East people are not living in the South East.

Majority of this more than 30% lives in South West.

The rest are in South South and North.

Now, if you take a look at 18.3 million voters from South West you will see that not less than 4 million are South West based South Easterners.

And if you look at 15.2 million voters from South South you will see that not less than 2 million of the voters are South South based South Easterners.

Apart from South South based South Easterners, there are South South people who identify and are Ndigbo.

More than 4 million South Easterners are based in the North. And they registerd there.

If you add all this numbers together you will see that Yoruba actually doesn't have more people than Ndigbo

Some ignorant ones believe Peter Obi will lose the election..I love the figures from Lagos, South South,North Central, Abuja and Kaduna. These are the places that will determine who will win or lose the election. Peter Obi has to go far in his campaign in my home state of Delta and in Rivers state.Getting 80% votes from these states will erase all the votes the Agbado master will get from Southwest and Borno..In Borno, those ridiculous numbers from Boko Haram infested LGA is no longer possible. Those fake figures won't be appearing.Borno won't record up to 400k votes. Mark my word here.

Thumbs up to the youths for answering this clarion call. How can a party that doesn't create jobs continue to play a tribal card.

Those supporting this government are government working class people who benefits from the corrupt system and hence want the status quo to remain. They exist in all tribes. Some of them get bribed to defend the government at all cost. You guys will hear from jobless youths come 2023.

Enough is enough. You claim not to have removed subsidy yet the price of petrol is N190 now. Why then is it skyrocketing?

What APC/PDP are doing now is to commission some people for their social media dirty jobs. I know someone who was contacted for this role and declined later.

They were told to create fake social media accounts and throw tribal insults to derail Obi's movement. Sometimes you would think all the insults on Yorubas comes from Igbos, or insults on Igbos comes from Yorubas. Similarly insults on Hausas.

It is shameful the extent these people can go. Even creating facebook accounts with Igbo names or Yoruba names. These looters are horrible.

When I listened to this guy on the directives they were given, I felt like shedding tears. Even the guy resigned because his moral upbringing could not allow him. Its a big shock to them how Obi have made this tremendous progress. How would anyone imagine that Obi would ever be a topic of discussion after he decamped from PDP? All these unknown gunmen killing people in the east were actually sponsored by PDP/APC. These evil people can go to any limit to achieve their political goals.

All I know is that no right thinking person whom survived the past 7 years would go through the rigorous Inec process of waiting days in queue just to get registered, would do that for APC again..... Not to think a youth whom the country has battered most from unemployment to strike, to poverty.. even if a man is moved, a family woman would likely not be moved one bit. She wants best for her children.

Vote Obi for a better Nigeria..

I believe you should be ashame of yourself because it's either you're being mischievous or you lack basic statistical knowledge, by your submission almost 22% of registered voters in the South West are Igbo? Which mean every 1 in 5 voter in the South West are Igbo and the remaining 4 are Yoruba, Hausa, Fulani, Edo and other numerous tribe in Nigeria? What a life!

So, in the period under review, Southsouth performed the best by adding about 3.2million new voters.

That’s about 1million above the almighty Northwest that some fools are urinating on their cloth and choosing an all Muslim ticket to impress.

Rivers State is now the fourth most electoral valuable state in Nigeria too.

If we critically analyze this data and consider how each top candidate stands in the top five states…

You will discover that in Lagos, with the highest number of voters of 7.1million, it is split in an almost 50:50 ratio between Peter Obi and Tinubu. Peter Obi might even pull a surprise and win the state.

The next most valuable state is Kano which is now out of reach of both Tinubu and Atiku. It must be admitted however that the duo of Atiku and Tinubu are still going to garner some votes in the state.

Third on the log, Kaduna, is still open for a taking with Peter Obi’s Running Mate coming from here and with the Southern Kaduna factor, where this state will swing is still be seen. But when you recall that Elrufai of APC is a sitting governor then you won’t dismiss APC still. Atiku and Kwankwaso are also considerably popular here.

The only two states with major voting numbers that is safe for a candidate are Rivers and Delta, two states that are very Obidient.

Let me not bore you with long tales… just want you to see Peter Obi victory staring at your face.
