The US suddenly has interest in a sovereign Taiwan because most of the chips used in Smartphones and modern cars come from TSMC in Taiwan.

If you knew your history too well, you would have known that the US interest on Taiwan didn't start today. Go back and read the Chinese civil war and the role the US played. You can also read about the first, second and third Taiwan crisis. All these occured at a point Taiwan has not become a chip manufacturing powerhouse. That chip is the reason the US is backing Taiwan is laughable.
