It commemorate the day prophet Musa (Moses) was given victory against the tyrant pharaoh and his forces when they all drowned in the red sea. On the backdrop, the Jews were marking the day every year as a festival and also fasting on that day. Hence the Prophet (S.A.W) then stated that "we are more appropriate to celebrate the victory of Moses than the Jews " ,hence the fasting on the 10th and also promised to fast on the 9th from subsequent year which he did not live to witness.
