NBC suspends shutdown of 53 broadcast stations after IPI Nigeria’s intervention

Following the intervention of the Nigerian chapter of the International Press Institute, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has suspended the revocation of the operating licenses of 52 broadcast stations owing various sums in licensing fees.

The NBC has now given the affected stations up to 6PM on Tuesday, August 23, to pay up their debts.

In revoking the licenses on Friday, the commission had ordered the stations off air beginning this Saturday, citing Section 10(a) of the 3rd Schedule of the National Broadcasting Commission Act CAP N11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

The provision says, “10. A licence may be revoked by the Commission in the following cases, that is (a) where the prescribed fee has not been paid on the due date…”

After the announcement, IPI Nigeria engaged the Ministry of Information and Culture, the NBC and the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) to explore amicable resolution of the dispute.

“We are glad to report that the Director General of NBC, Malam Balarabe Shehu Ilela, has graciously agreed to grant an extension on compassionate ground,” IPI Nigeria President, Musikilu Mojeed, said on Saturday.

“Even though this is a temporary relief, we are hopeful that all parties will engage in the next few days with a view to arriving at a lasting resolution of the matter. We thank the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed and Mallam Illela for listening to us and allowing a window for dialogue.

“During our engagement with the Commission, the NBC explained that the commission had in the past granted several concessions to broadcast organisations, including writing off substantial parts of their debts and engaging them consistently to fulfill their financial obligations to the regulator.

“We implore the affected broadcasting organisations to take advantage of this window of opportunity by reaching out to the NBC.

“Nobody benefits when broadcasting stations are shut down. Members of the public have come to rely on these stations to know what their governments are doing to keep them safe in this challenging security environment. Other governments’ policies are also disseminated to the public through these channels.

“In view of the nation’s economic downturn, we further appeal to the affected broadcast stations and the NBC to agree a workable payment arrangement of the outstanding dues.”

Following intervention of Concerned Groups and visible concerted efforts by some defaulting Licensees to offset their debts, The National Broadcasting Commission announces extension of Deadline to Shutdown to 6.00PM on Tuesday August 23, 2022.

Why is Lagos State Broadcasting Corporation on that list? Abi Lagos no get money to renew broadcast license?

ufotunang:
.how will they have money when the federal government does not provide a condusive environment for this radio stations to strive...no constant electricity light they use disel at 850 per litre to power their generator to run the radio stations, bad roads, multiple taxation, 700 naira to a dollar... with all of these the radio station will run in a lose and find it difficult to pay to renew their licenses and pay taxes
Are other states that renewed their licenses not operating in Nigeria under the same conditions you listed?

ufotunang:
..yes they are all operating in the same condition.....but not all the owners of radio stations are the same financially in wealth, richee.....those radio stations are owned by wealthy people...so even if those radio stations are running in a lose the owner can still pay the broadcast licenses out of his own pocket since he has the money, he is wealthy.... like a radia station in uyo ..I really like listening to which is ..planet radio 101.1 fm uyo..the owner of the radio station was in USA for many years working there ..made a lot of money (dollars) and he set up a radio station..planet radio 101,1 fm uyo in his village...the man is a billionaire, wealthy.. still have some bussiness in USA..so such a person can pay the broadcast licenses easily m even if his radio stations is running in a loss...but the ones that the owner are not that wealthy will find it difficult to pay their licenses when they are running in a lose

I get your point bro. My point is Lagos State has money (even more than the US billionaire you talked about). Why are they on that list? Why is Rivers & Bayelsa on that list too?
You can see my point.

Do they not realise that the cost of diesel has skyrocketed tremendously and that radio/TV stations are just struggling to stay on-air.

Actually none of them even went offair in the first place. Maybe they took it with a pinch of salt or NBC didn't really implement the licence takeover stuff.

All the same , they should bear with these stations for God's sake, most of them are running at loss with the diesel price on the high side and maintenance costs going up on a daily.

I remember at a time, some of them running 24hrs in Lagos had to cut down their time, closed by midnight and returned around 5am.
Some are still doing it up till now.

It's not easy generally for media houses

Lol time to start switching to podcasts. These broadcasters can't get enough ad revenue to cover their cost.
