It has just occurred to me to ask this question:

Why is the word, 'Honours' added to the first degree in most cases?

Because it involves a longer period of study than a non-honours degree.

Though i dont know if its practiced in Nigeria but there are other Bachelors degrees programmes that are non-honours

Honours degree is between 4-5years
Non-honours is between 1-3 years.

But the Honours degree is required to process a Masters programme.

In nigeria..with honours means you completed a bachelors degree within the established time frame....no extra year..

Thats why in nigeria u can have 1st class, second class or even thrid class with honors....

Abroad .....honours mean something different per institution
