Today while correcting a subordinate at work on what she did wrong, she shouted at me out of blues in front of other staff members claiming that I was shouting at her, while all I did was point out what she did wrong......A few minutes later she's already at HR accusing me of repeatedly shouting at her....

It's the first time I'm experiencing this, having not done something similar to any of my bosses before, I'm at loss at how to deal with this. HR has asked me to send in my report so they can follow it up, but I don't just know if that will take care of the root cause of her actions today

It is wrong to shout at anyone at work, boss and subordinate alike. Again, what people consider as shouting is subjective. You said you were pointing out her wrong doings, but you didn't tell us how. Pray tell, how did you point out what she did wrong? Was there a reason why she was criticized in the presence of others? Most importantly, can others attest to the fact that you were neither rude nor raised your voice at her? If they can, then you have nothing to worry about. HR knows the employees and they know what each is likely to do. If you're not the shouting type and if she's the problematic type, they'd know how to handle it. This shouldn't stop you from being the leader that you are or make you treat any differently.

It seems at some point I raised my voice but not literally the way she did as if we were in a market place....my reaction is a build up of frustration of the girls other past work related misbehaviour.,...hope to wake and handle things better going forward

Nice. The essence of feedback is to correct, and you can't really correct an adult by raising your voice. You can only correct an adult by letting them know the implication of thier actions. Any altercation with her would be a win on her side cause it'll embolden her, bring you down to her level, and most importantly, it'll cast a shadow of doubt on your year-end evaluation of her because she could claim you're witch-hunting her cause of the fight. The mere fact that her progress in the organization is dependent on your feedback to the management should be enough to keep her in check. And if it doesn't, do what you must and do not feel bad about it.

Why? He was toxic, a bully and was determined to make me hate my job.

Did I plan to shout at him?
No, I didn’t. However, I knew that day would come at the rate he was going. He on his part never saw it coming because I am very soft-spoken.

What happened after that?
Nothing happened. My colleagues told me to prepare for a query and I told them I am very prepared. I even told him to give me the query because he was fond of threatening us with queries. He never did that.

The silent treatment after that was very loud. At some point he started asking me the engine capacity of my car and if my iPhone charger is original.

He thought I would blow the whistle on him, given that his way wasn’t pure. I never did that, would never have done that.

Subsequently he spoke to me with respect and we had peace until I left.

I don’t know the dynamics of your own situation, but I trust HR to handle it. My own boss was a known troublemaker. So he couldn’t have reported me to HR.

That said, I am very wary of people that rush to HR. I have given queries without copying HR. Just internal and for documentation purposes. Maybe your subordinate is a greenhorn, a witch or just too forward. She has a lot to learn.

I have not been shouted, but I have shouted at a colleague with dull brain.

All these HRs too like report, any small thing, send your report

I have never given room for that.
But I have shouted at my superior before.
After that dude started respecting me.

I have done that severally to my subordinates/boys and not the other way round..

One did...I enrolled him into Emotional Intelligence Course in Lagos...for 5 days. I continually deducted the cost of the training from his salary for five months.

Most times women. They lacked decorum. They'll just started shouting like they in a face- i-face U compound fight. Whenever I'm involved in such situation, I just leave the person there and issue a query straightforward

Yeah! By my superior though. He did and I didn't talk back at him even when I wasn't at fault. He later found out the truth about an hour later, and he apologized to me. I felt good you know. Respect and loyalty pays.
