The All Progressives Congress, Lagos State chapter, has faulted the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, Olajide Adediran (popularly known as Jandor) and his running mate, Funke Akindele, over their visit to the owners of vehicles auctioned by the state government for traffic offences.

The state government had on Thursday auctioned 134 vehicles impounded at the Lagos State Taskforce compound in Alausa, Ikeja, for various traffic offences.

Adediran, with Akindele had visited two of the owners of the auctioned vehicles, Mr Lateef Kolapo and Mr Osinachi Ndukwe, during which they condemned the penalty as harsh and promised that the traffic law would be repealed by their government.

In a video seen by our correspondent on Sunday, Adediran, during the visit, said, “When you are on the wrong side of the law, yes there should be a penalty, but there shouldn’t be a penalty that will take our means of livelihood. That is what we are speaking against. So, my coming here is to see Mr Kolapo and assure him of hope.


“As we speak, that is the law of the state, unfortunately. But the coming government, by His grace, will repeal this law to ensure that irrespective of what you have done wrong on our road, we won’t take your means of livelihood.


“We will make sure we penalise but not to the point of taking what you use in catering for your family away from you.”

In another video also seen by our correspondent on Sunday, Ndukwe stated that he was sentenced to three months imprisonment for driving against the traffic, and his vehicle was impounded. During his jail term, he lost his three-year-old daughter and after he served the jail term, his bus was eventually auctioned.

Adediran and Akindele commiserated with Ndukwe for his loss and reiterated that despite their stance against violation of traffic laws, the state should not take away the offenders’ means of livelihood.

We are first humans before anything else, and that should be considered in some rare cases where we simply take some decisions to promote humanity.

While there is no justification for their actions, the government on its part isn't considerate of their plight.

This is obviously the first time we have seen traffic offenders serve jail term for traffic offence and their vehicles confiscated and sold.
We can now see reason why a traffic offender will take the wisest decision of taking to his heels and leave his only source of livelihood behind when he gets targeted by traffic officials or even sanwoolu.
We have read in this forum where there's no sign indicating one way in some Lagos roads like oworonshoki. And every time people expend their money and time to put one, traffic Officers and their agents stationed there will not only remove them but will even misinform others who asked for direction to ply that oneway route and thereafter clamp down on them and the JJCS.
Since LASG has opened the floor for critical comments, Jandor only expressed himself by been critical on government decision.

All of them are just too desperate to leverage on any given situation or opportunity to score cheap political goals.

Why would you auction people's vehicles? When you haven't given the owners genuine opportunities to reclaim it.

Make them pay a fine, I know nobody wants to pay maybe 50k every day due to driving offences.
In another country, you pay a fine, for wrong driving. In Nigeria, they sell the car even after going to prison.

To be honest it’s too harsh to deprive them their means of livelihood. They could simply be fined with some amount of money that could cost them their possible gains for that day. How about the government officials that run against traffic? Who auctions their vehicles. The law doesn’t apply to everyone, everything is all about the poor masses. Which law criminalizes our politicians stealing billions of dollars of our National wealth.
