Quiting My Job To Venture Into Tech At 28 - Advice Needed. by SeunWedsLinda(m): 12:34am On Sep 28, 2022
So I have this administrative job that pays me 100k on the island in Lagos. The job doesn't actually afford me any opportunity to grow and I have done a serious introspection of what the future holds and I am not particularly pleased with my analysis.

I am seriously considering resigning from the job to venture into tech. This has been bothering me for quite some time now and it's even compounded by the fact that if I should decide to venture into tech, I would have to go from zero to hundred in six months(don't know how possible this is but I feel it's doable with intensive self learning)

On the other hand, I'm confused on which to go for between data science/analysis and web/software development.

Should I quit my job and venture into tech? In terms of having job prospects and getting employable in 6 months, which skill should I go for? Also considering my age.

I will also appreciate advice outside the scope of what I posted. I know a lot of people might have been through this one time. How were you able to surmount it?

Did exactly same February this year, got a job last month that paid my feb- July salary straight. But before then can you endure knowing filly well that you are entering spending spree. Also worthy of note is that Doubt and frustration can set in in the process at times, regarding quitting your previous job, earning something no matter what etc. Pray and be sure before you quit. Blessings!

Be ready to suffer for few months and reap a good harvest for life. I will advise you to go through a school that offers linking their Graduates to jobs, that's the fastest route to getting a Tech job in Nigeria in my opinion. Like Income Sharing Agreement, schools like Decagon, stutern, altschool. that way in 8months you might have a job, though you will give them a percentage of your salary for months, but it is worth it.

No dont resign. When you come back from work practice coding, weekends practice coding. Do web development, both front end and back end. Start with back end.

If you have a very solid support structure and a sizeable amount of savings that can at least get you unlimited monthly data for 6 months to a year then I would advise that you take the plunge. A 100k job as an admin that doesn't have much career growth doesn't leave much to be desired honestly and at the rate the naira is falling the 100k might be equivalent to 100 usd by year end.

In 2014 when I was in year one I was making $500-$700 on my website blog with Google adsense alone.... Indeed Tech/internet is the new oil money. grin

Better use your bald head and quit the job.... You're 12 years to being 40.

And u know what they say about those in their 40s

No quit ya Jon for Tech.

You can handle both.

Best advice.

Admin is a great field. In Nigeria we unda utilize talents. Get a beta job while u learn tech by the side.. E no easy as you think.

But if you think you have guts, then be ready for frustration and depression until u make it. No guarantee for making it.

Good luck.

I was a Network Staff, I didn't have anything tech skill except for Network hub management which is almost out of the "tech" definition. I started with ALX and diverted to my own lesrning after 4 months.

The way you dey "attack" people in their 40s veering into tech no fair o. You go still reach that 40 years and realize that 40 is the new 25. (I'm hovering around that 40 and don't feel like I've lost my mojo one bit)

Self discipline is the key, try to read atomic habits and eat that frog, maybe 5 pages per day. Determine to be seated and on ur lappy by a particular time only get up at ur stipulated time. Draft ur timetable a day before.
