CBN Spends N281bn To Print New Notes In 5 Years by Islie: 7:54am On Oct 28, 2022
The CBN has spent N281.07 billion to print bank notes between 2016 and 2020 and another N3.88 billion to destroy mutilated notes within the same period.

Data from the apex bank showed that N33.37 billion had been used to print new notes in 2016, the amount expended increased to N49.52 billion and N64.04 billion 2017 and 2018. By the end of 2019, N75.52 billion had been spent on printing new naira notes as the amount spent declined in 2020 to N58.07 billion.

Within the same five year period, the central bank spent N3.88 billion to destroy N4.197 trillion. N1.44 billion was spent in 2016 to dispose of mutilated naira notes with a value of N829.94 billion. The amount spent however dropped by almost half to N594.62 million spent in 2017 to destroy N977 billion.

The money spent in disposing N814.59 billion rose to N662.21 million in 2018 and declined slightly to N647.82 million that was used to dispose of N814.43 billion. In 2020, N538.59 million had been used to destroy N698.59 billion.

Recall that the CBN, Wednesday, announced plans to redesign and reissue the N1000, N500 and N200 currency denominations, in an effort to rein in inflation and take control of money supply in the country.

CBN governor Godwin Emefiele, who’d made this known also said the current naira notes will no longer be legal tender from January 31, 2023.

However, analysts have worried that this move is bound to put more pressure on the nation’s economy which is grappling with high fiscal deficit, debt crisis, severe revenue crisis and underfunding of many government projects and programmes.

Priting money and destroying money does not come cheap.

You need money to create money, you need money to destroy it, isn't it funny.

It is also similar when building and destroying a house, you need money to build a house, you also need money to destroy it.

This story is one sided, stereotypical and meant to disparage Emefiele's efforts.

You only stated how much was spent to print money, after printing, how many notes did they realize and was it not worth more than the amount spent.

Think, think, you have brains shocked shocked grin grin

If Nigerians inculcate culture of handling the naira notes with sense of dignity and respect CBN may spend far less to print naira notes.

For minting money that's a bit logical although we know those are falsified figures the CBN is ditching o.

But they should bring a breakdown of how they used billions in destroying money...

Maybe 10 million for matches
500 million for fuel
Workmanship to carry out the burning / shredding operation
10 billion.

CONCERNS ON COST OF PRINTING NAIRA NOTES
Emefiele also confirmed that the change of currency notes would influence the value of the naira, but did not give further details.

"...The cost of such an action would be outrageous and disproportionate compared to the expected benefits advanced by the CBN. At a time when the government is grappling with high fiscal deficit, debt crisis, severe revenue crisis and underfunding of many government projects and programmes, it is most inappropriate to embark on such a profligate exercise.

.....There are more urgent issues demanding the attention of the CBN. “We have issues with liquidity in the foreign exchange market, the depreciating currency, the recent Moody’s downgrade of Nigeria, soaring inflation and many more,”
