Former Super Eagles coach and member of the NFF technical committee, Christian Chukwu has said that the committee has approved coach Samson Siasia’s list of players invited for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier with Madagascar in Antananarivo in a fortnight.

Speaking with Sports Vanguard Monday, the former Green Eagles captain said, “we have given the coach approval for his programme and advised the secretariat to make sure everything works out well as the match against Madagascar is a must win. We approved the list he submitted without any alteration. We don’t want to be seen as impeding his job so we approved the list as he brought it.”

Asked if there were any new faces among the invited players, Chukwu quipped, “I don’t know which face is new or old. I don’t know the names off hand but the whole thing will soon be made public.”

Chukwu however, did not rule out the possibility of some young players making it to the senior national team in future, but was quick to add, “they can be very good, but you know it can’t be automatic.”

He acknowledged the enormous amount of talent in the current U-20 national team that just returned from the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup where they ended up in the quarterfinal and said “despite their exit in the round of 8, everybody was happy with their performance in Colombia.”

The former coach of Enugu Rangers also said the Super Falcons who are meeting their Cameroonian counterparts in a 2012 Olympic qualifier have been well prepared for the tie. “Like the male U-20 team the girls have been in camp for some weeks now. We want to prepare our teams very well ahead of any competition. We don’t want excuses and we are always guided by this,” Chukwu said.

Must Sissia list of the players he wants to use for match be approved by the NFF technical committee? Are they not supposed to give him a 100% freedom to chose his players? Was this how other coaches (both foreign and local) were treated? They should allow this man do his job the best way he can o!

CONTRARY to stories by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), there seems to be no concord between Super Eagles’ coach Samson Siasia and the NFF technical committee on the best approach to the game against Madagascar in Maputo, which may determine Nigeria’s fate in the race for the 2011 Africa Nations Cup.

Nigeria is trailing Guinea by three points in Group B and needs an outright victory in Antananarivo to be in a comfortable position before the last group game against the Guineans in Abuja.

However, instead of sitting together to plot ways of winning the game in Antananarivo, the NFF and Siasia are locked in the battle of wits over the composition of the team to prosecute the game against Madagascar and the international friendly against Argentina in Dhakar, Bangladesh, respectively.

The Guardian learnt that the NFF technical committee members, who expected the Eagles coach to appear before it last Friday to defend his choice of players, were seething in anger over the coach’s failure to face them on that date even when he made them know that he was not healthy enough for that exercise on the appointed time.

According to the source, the committee believes that Siasia failed to appear before it on Friday because he was not comfortable with its oversight functions, which he sees as interference in his job. The source said: “We have allowed him to go ahead with the release of the list of his players for the match because he feels that the technical committee is meddling in his job.

“But the truth remains that the technical committee must have an input in the list of any of the national team’s coaches, including Siasia, because we are all working for one purpose and that is ensuring that we win in our matches.”

Another sore point in the NFF’s viewpoint is the “over-bloated” list of 30 players for the matches, a source in the federation said, adding that the football body disagreed with the coach over some players he listed for the games and those he dropped.

He revealed that the coach has accepted to appear before the committee today to explain why he invited 30 players, adding that he was convinced the committee would reduce the number to 23.
