bring out the harddisk from the the laptop, and insert it in an external harddrive case. then buy a recovery software or download one online and then install it in another computer. put the external harddrive(ie the damaged one) into the computer installed wit the recovery software and use it to recover the files in the damaged hard drive, goodluck

If you connect through external HDD stuff and it dosnt come up, try putting it in the refridgerator for some minutes and then try again. This should be your last resort, after which you dump the hard drive

Dude, this section is all about rendering help to others. I think you're trying to milk the OP, you want to sell him an e-book. If you truly wish to help, please post the details here. Not do a clandestine rip-off behind closed doors.

I had a similar experience few weeks back, a guys helped me out because the files were really important to me and my biz.

But the first responce is the only way, but you have to be slightly technically inclined to be able to do it yourself.

Buy external hard drive casing ( SATA or IDE) depending on your hard drivve type, put in the hard drive, try connect it to another machine, if it work, u are lucky, if it does not work, get a free online recovery software( easy data recovery) install it on another machine and connect the hard drive, it will be resolved.

For the dandruff guy, it is a good question but in the wrong thread, it is completely off the discussion, i will also recommend that you buy Norton anti-dandruff

I inserted my External Hard Disk into a friend's computer to copy a file. When I finished, I put it on my computer but all my folders have turned to "shortcuts". Since then, I have tried it on many computers, it is still the same. I have plugged it into the USB port and shut down the computer, it is still the same thing.
One thing is that, the hard drive still reads and shows used space.

Pls, help.

Exactly the problem I have with my external hard disk. The used space is still there, was showing the shortcuts before but now the files are completely hidden and when I do a folder or file search it brings out the hidden folder or files for me to access but will never show them.

Please somebody should help!!!

I had the same problem some months back.

Diagnosis
A virus has made a shortcut of your files and hidden the original files

Solution
1. Connect the hard disk to the system.
2. I used Kaspersky Antivirus to remove the virus, (the name of the virus would be similar to *.exe)
3. Click on "Start" -->Run --> type ‘cmd’ and click OK. or press the windows button + R.

4. From the command prompt, navigate to your hard disk/flash drive using this command.
cd /D f:/
where f is the letter of your hard disk shown in the My Computer window.

5. Enter this command.
attrib -h -r -s /s /d f:\*.*
You can copy the above command --> Right-click in the Command Prompt and paste it.

6. Smile (hopefully)

Let me share my personal experience and it might help you. I had a 1tb hard drive, with about 800gd of data on it. i let it fall off once and the disk became unreadable. Tried all sorts of data recovery softwares with no luck. Then i went for broke by installing Ubuntu 10.0 on my notebook and connected the hardrive to it. There were my files intact from ubuntu and all i had to do was buy another 1tb hard drive and transfer.
The best news of it though is Ubuntu is totally free like all unix platforms and downloadable online.

You might not understand how your HDD responded positively. It was not Ubuntu that did. When it fell, the connector shifted and possibly realigned by mistake. That is why it works.

But with us, we have tools and HDD doctors to repair and retrieve data from HDD with more serious failure, Virus attack, shortcuts and invisible folders.
