12 Criteria to Be Called The Greatest of All Time in Football

Below is my criteria to be called the GOAT in football.

1. At least 1 Balon d'Or
2. At least 1 Champions League
3. At least 1 Continental Cup
4. At least 1 World Cup win or 2 WC 2nd place or 3 WC 3rd place
5. At least 1 League Cup (PL, Laliga, Ligue 1, etc.)
6. At least 500 goals in entire career
7. At least 50 free kicks scored in career
8. At least 100 penalties scored in career
9. At least 30 goals cumulatively in a final game in a career
10. At least 1000 games played in career
11. At least 50 hat-tricks and 100 braces in career
12. At least 7% humility out of 10%

Bonus 1: At least 300 assists in entire career
Bonus 2: You must score a brace or a hat-trick in a World Cup final
Bonus 3: Must play all games in the World Cup and must score at least 1 goal in each stage before the final, which you must score a brace or a hat-trick.

Based on my criteria, Messi has 1 goal to score in a final to make it 30 goals cumulatively in a final match in his career. He has 1 WC to win, and 40 more matches to play to be called GOAT.

For Ronaldo to be the GOAT, he has 1 WC to win, up his humility from the current 5% of 10% to at least 7%, and 11 more goals to score in finals to make it 30 cumulatively in his entire career.

So, with this, Ronaldo can never be a GOAT because I doubt he'll ever win a WC or score 11 goals in different cup's finals to make it 30 goals. Also, I doubt he will increase his humility.

For Messi, even after scoring and winning the WC, he's not still the GOAT. He needs 40 more games to be finally confirmed a GOAT. He doesn't need to score in the games — he just needs to play them to make it 1000 career games.

Messi has 70% of being confirmed an official GOAT over Ronaldo who has 30% chances.

At the moment, none of them is a GOAT yet, but Messi has the upper hand.

Modified on the 18th of Dec. 2022. Argentina won and Messi had a hat-trick. Also, I checked Google and realized he has played more than 1,000 games in his career. So, Messi is officially the GOAT.

That debate is now over. Though, Ronaldo is still our legend just like Pelé, Jay jay, and Zidane, but Messi is the official GOAT. The Greatest of All Time.

This contradicts the point you rised in number 6 (6. At least 500 goals in entire career)
Reason: What matters most is getting up to 500 goal. In as much as a player can accumulate 500 goals in a carrer, it should not matter whether is by hat trick or brace.



Number 12. Humlity cannot be qauntified. Football is emotional and emotion driven.

Bonus 2: You must score a brace or a hat-trick in a World Cup final to be called the GOAT.
