English teacher training leads to a professional teaching qualification called qualified teacher status (QTS).

If you’re a qualified teacher from outside the UK, you can work as a teacher in England for up to 4 years without QTS.

After that, QTS is a legal requirement to teach in many English schools, and considered desirable for teachers in the majority of schools in England.

From 1 February 2023, teachers who qualified in the following 9 countries will also be able to apply to TRA for QTS:

Ghana
Hong Kong
India
Jamaica
Nigeria
Singapore
South Africa
Ukraine
Zimbabwe
This change is part of the launch of a new service, apply for QTS in England. From 1 February 2023, the way we award QTS will change.

Teachers from all eligible countries will have to show they meet a consistent set of criteria for the award of QTS. Over time, this route will be opened to qualified teachers from every country outside the UK.

Working as a teacher while you undergo assessment only QTS
You can work as a teacher in England and earn a salary while you’re assessed for QTS.

The 4-year rule means you can find a teaching job and apply to a teacher training provider offering assessment only QTS in the region of England where you work. Your employing school can support you with this.

When you apply for assessment only QTS you’ll:
have to pay a fee
not have to undergo any further training
not have to visit the UK

International qualifications
If your qualifications come from a non-UK institution, your assessment only teacher training provider may want to see a ‘statement of comparability’ showing how they compare to UK qualifications.

You can call us on 0800 389 2500 for:

guidance on the UK equivalents of your qualifications
a free statement of comparability from UK ENIC once you’ve submitted your application, if your provider asks for this
Your teaching experience must:

consist of time spent teaching (as opposed to other responsibilities in a school)
have taken place in 2 separate schools (not 2 classes within the same school or 2 school sites within the same organisation)
demonstrate you’ve taught young people from a range of different backgrounds
demonstrate you’re familiar with different approaches to teaching, learning and school management

Your teaching experience can have been:

gained in any type of school, for example, international schools, schools teaching the International Baccalaureate, and state-maintained schools outside the UK
spent teaching a non-English curriculum (though you may need to show you have knowledge of the subjects taught in the English curriculum)
divided between 2 school settings as long as you have 2 years’ teaching experience in total
British international school organisations
British international schools provide suitable experience for teachers wishing to apply for assessment only QTS. However, it is not a requirement to gain your experience at a British international school. Reputable British international school organisations include:

the Association of British School Overseas (AoBSO)
the Council of British International Schools (COBIS)
the Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA)
British Schools in the Middle East (BSME)
the Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA)

Assessment only costs
Fees range from about £1,500 to £4,000, but vary between providers and may be substantially more if you’re outside the UK. Check with individual providers for more details.

Thank you for the information, please, is ENIC the only requirement or one needs to have ECCTIS too? I heard ENIC is just to prove that the courses were taught in English while ECCTIS is a language proficiency test. I'm confused.

And for the teachers, can a teacher of English in Nigeria give it a shot?

Eligibility Criteria
A. have an undergraduate degree of the same academic standard as a UK bachelor’s degree, as verified by UK ENIC

The statement ‘as verified by UK ENIC’ suggests you might be asked for verification - if so ENIC compares qualifications and issues a statement of qualification for £49

*Eligibility criteria application for QTS*

I will be making comments on each criteria below
B. have completed teacher training that meets the standard of a level 6 qualification and is of at least the same length as an English initial teacher training course – for example, a Bachelor of Education or a Postgraduate Certificate in Education

Level 6 is first degree level. This disqualifies non- degree level teachers. If you have a B Ed or PGDE, you can pass this stage

C. have completed a course with content that is practically and pedagogically focused
be qualified to teach children aged between 5 and 16 years

QTS is not a qualification for teaching nursery aged children. So keep in mind if you are a nursery teacher. There are other qualifications for teaching nursery age children in the UK

However if you have the degrees accepted for teaching you can apply - but your QTS is for primary to secondary school

D. have at least one school year (a minimum of 9 months including school holidays but excluding time out taken for any other reason) of professional experience working as a teacher after qualifying

This means you will present evidence of teaching experience. For QTS by assessment it is a letter from your principal or headteacher. I do not now know what evidence is required here, but I guess is that it will be the same or at least a letter from a school you have taught in and teach in

E. have the professional status needed to be a teacher in the country where you qualified, and not be subject to any conditions or restrictions on your practice

This means a TRCN certification. We cannot now say whether it is the certificate or license only, or if TRCN will be requested to confirm this status

F. You must also meet a certain standard of English language proficiency.

Options are:

1. You have been born in UK or schooled in UK at undergrad level or higher or

2. You have been taught in English at undergrad level with proof from you that English was the medium of instruction. This proof is relative, for university level different proof are accepted or not accepted

3. A recognised English language test of proficiency like IELTS

G. Mathematics and science qualifications. *In future,* we intend to ask overseas teachers applying for QTS for evidence that they hold a:

1. mathematics qualification which meets the same standard as GCSE grade 4

2. science qualification which meets the same standard as GCSE grade 4 (for teaching primary school)

However, we know from research that applicants find it difficult to provide this evidence.

For this reason, we’ll introduce these criteria later, at the end of 2023. This will allow us to learn how best to support applicants to meet them.

This advice from the UK government website speaks for itself. *Future* means after 2023
