I'm seeing a lot of silly comments...sorry to say...that amount basically to 'The Best doctors have left Africa, therefore we have quacks'...because of one single case of malpractice in Zimbabwe.

First off, hundreds of successful CS take place in Nigeria every month without any complications. They don't make the news because the patient recovers fully. It's the bad news/complicated news that makes the papers. It does not negate the fact that negligence is a minority...not the majority.

Second, we don't know what happened here. Until there is a full investigation...we don't know if the woman died because 'the intestine was cut' or because there was a massive internal bleed, or because there was a issue with sepsis. All we have is some vague comments.

Finally, doctors leave nigeria not because of PDP or APC, or Obi or Buhari but because Nigeria pays a tax to gdp ratio of 8.1%. The countries we run to pay higher taxes, rely more on production, and as such have money to pay doctors to stay...and even then doctors jakpa (UK is taking a lot of our medicos...because many of theirs run abroad...to Austrialia among other places self). And also because fees are kept too low in Nigeria.

Here in Nigeria, a CS costs about N100000 , maybe as high as N500000 in some private hospitals. In the UK..one million naira or more. In the US...13 million naira. That's why they have money to attract our doctors. And Nurses, And other medical staff.

One reason why I say I won't vote for APC, PDP, LP, or NNPP, is not because I am pretending, but because none of the candidates so far are ready to take the tough decisions needed for us to get more money. Instead, we throw millions on corruption, subsides, and more subsides, and take loans to cover our asses. And every government does the same thing. We also don't want to raise that thing called tax to gdp ratio.

At the end of the day, we don't have enough money to pay for better salaries and facilites for our medics. Meanwhile in the UK, people can pay half their salaries for good service. Same in places like Germany (I even know one very good doctor who won't jakpa because he does not want to pay the type of taxes they pay in UK...he has a growing family self). The oil we use, at best , provides us a revenue of about 100bn dollars per annum if oil is above 100 dollars per barrel...or as low as 40bn per annum if oil is below 50 dollars per barrel. Not enough for the 230 million of us. We need an annual income of at least...in my opinion...300 billion dollars per annum to survive properly. And yes, we need to fight corruption well well. But for now, we need to earn more money than we earn now...not the one where we spend beyond our means and then take loans from mother IMF so that we don't get embarrased.

If you want to stop doctors from jakpa...either get government to remove subsides on petrol and power, so that they make enough profit to fix themselves , and so that the stealing , smuggling and sabotage therein ends , and that means that we would get jobs directly and indrectly...and a growing, industrial economy in ten years or more. Not this one where we vote for leaders like Buhari, Obi, Tinubu, GEJ , Atiku, etc because they will give us cake. We are too old for cake.
Lots of sense in your comments. Raw truths like you said lead to Nigerians burying their head in sand.

Medical negligence happens in Europe, North America and Middle east too.

Does that mean that quacks have taken over in those countries?

The brain drain happening in that profession is not hidden. And when inexperienced doctors start filling those loopholes, doom is certain

Even then, medical negligence happens everywhere, not just in Nigeria.

Over the last one week, a lot of successful obstetric operations were performed in many hospitals in Nigeria. And in Zim too. They don't make the news because it does not sell papers or lead to more clicks to report that 'Dr JAKL sucessfully did three CS at Obonge Hospital today'

And even if all our doctors stayed in Nigeria...we still don't have enough of them...before we even talk about specialists self.

You are right! Errors are bound, but with recent brain drain, more errors will come.

It’s happening in the IT and teaching sectors too. It will wonky take a matter of time before the loopholes cause sever impacts.

(And even some of the cases are not negligence. One woman once blamed doctors at a teaching hospital for 'removing her kidneys' during a CS. What the woman kindly forgot to mention was that she was warned beforehand during antenatal that she would need an elective CS for possible obstructed labour...and when she went into labour..she ran to her church to labor like the Israelite women...and the result was a cluster..of complications which led to her being rushed to the teaching hospital where the docs had to perform salvage operation on her...all because she did not heed instructions. Yet, na doctor's fault)

This kind mistake by such profession is not allowed imagine a life has been lost eroding confidence in the hospital.

If a pharmacologist made errors in his drug formulations millions will die.i remember that teething drug incident.
