Safe Skin Brightening Tips, Please!!!! by soldee: 1:15pm On Aug 27, 2007
Help,

the skin on my face is getting darker than the rest of my body. I hate it, makes me look like am suffering. How do I get that venus de milo skin? I don't want to go yellow, just brighten up without hydroquinone.

I hear clinique's intensive reparwear (N9,500) + clinique clarifying lotion 4 (N5,500) can do the job in less than three weeks but thats too pricey!!!!

I heard about Makari products but the few girls I no tried it have ended up with boils - NASTY.

Any suggestions?

My Dear, same problem i have here, I use PALMERS SKIN SUCCESS CREAM until i stopped, Some1 also recommended BIOCOTEN cream which didn't yield the desired result,
But i hear that CLEAR ESSENCE is very good only that it contains HYDROQUINONE.

Rosewater is also an excellent skin brightener and smoothener but its fifty-fifty. It will either brighten or darken u, whicheveer one it does, u'll see results in a week, but ur skin will definitely be smooth and glowing.

HOWEVER, Cliven Rosewater is the only rosewater that actually contains real rose extract. The others, even the very expensive tried and trusted brand names contain hydrogenated castor oil!!!! be warned,

Glycerin and rose water is good but it darkens.

You can use Visibly Even lotion it has spf which protects u from sun rays. It's not that the good lotions do not perform it's just that People tend to expose themsevels to sunrays without any protection. Avoid hydroquinne, it's end result is damaging. Use sunscreen like those with spf 15-25. A good lotions might have this.

you can try ''MAKARI'' cream though it is expensive.
Re: Safe Skin Brightening Tips, Please!!!! by soldee: 12:46pm On Sep 03, 2007
MAKARI??!!!! No No No Nooooooooo!!!!!

That stuff has DESTROYED so many faces. U get cysts and boils!!! and when u stop, u get darker than when u started.

It contains too many stearates, which penetrate the skin really deep (that why it seems to work so fast), but stays so deep that it traps dirt and sebum. Then u end up with terrible  pimples, like ten every three hours, or worse, cysts that turn as black as coal.

In fact, the rate at which makari works make s me believe it must contain steroids.

Proceed with Xtreme caution. If it works for u, thank God!!

I am a male model and a fashion magazine editor. I recommend Mary Kay 3 in 1 cleansing bar for you and also u need d age fighting mositurizer with spf 15. This will cost u 6500. But if you cant afford that then deal with it naturally. Take lots of water starting with 2 glasses as early as 5am in d morning, dont go outside d sun as from 10am -3pm, exfoliate your face with grained sugar mixed with honey once in two weeks, take ur nite bath daily and always with a warm water. This will make ur face smooth, clear and beautiful. If have any beauty problems dont forget to mail me at izusky4real@yahoo.com cos i m a specialist.

You can try Neutrogena soap, its very good, it worked for me and its just N560 but if you have the financial strength to buy the cream it is N2300, but i bet you that even when you only use the soap it's still good, cos thats how I started before I could afford the cream.

@Poster

Depending on where you live--it is difficult to maintain a healthy skin type in Nigeria especially, so be careful what you use.  The sun is scorching and the air is humid.  You best best is to keep away from the sun as much as possible if you are using any "skin lighteners" or "fade creams".  You do not want to end up with crocodile skin all over your body when you get older do you?

Stay away from the sun if you can, drink plenty of water, and if you choose to use "toners", stick to one and do not mix products.  Use them only at night if you cannot avoid the sun or use with a sunblock lotion containing Parsol, with nothing less than an spf-45 or greater content.  This is great for Ultra-Violet-Ray (UVA/UVB) protection--daily.  Wash off all make up at night with mild antibacterial soap twice a day.  If you have acne problems--stay away from all products and see a dermatologist first!

Try clear essence skin lightening serum for sensitive skin with citrus. It contains no hydroquinone. Its not that normal clear essence with the pink pack. Instead of pink, this one is yellow. It doesnt give bumps and pimples like the other one and it works real well.

When will people learn to stop using different soap or cream to lighten there faces undecided undecided

@topic
Normal everyone’s face are darker than the bodies since the face are usually more exposed, and the only time people show their skin is during summer which is just for 3month. My face is darker than my entire body but I got no problem with, and that is because as the season changes my face will get back to it normal color.

The only thing you should be worried most about is having a rough skin and pimples, ewwwwwww that is bad and disgusting, the only thing I will advice you to do is use face soap like Neutrogena, clinique e.t.c and stick to one product, you can use face wash napkin for oily face to, and get use in washing your face regularly, plz plz plz don't ever use coco butter cream for your face, it will darken it more than you expectedAnd use less make up so it doesn't give you a side burn

Sorry Dear, but by nature, i.e. assuming there is no environmental damage to the skin, the skin on your face is NATURALLY lighter than the rest of your body. Scientific evidence shows that the skin on the face is the thinnest of the whole body, with the eye area being the most delicate i.e. the lightest - thinner skin = lighter shade; thicker skin = darker shade. When the sun stresses the skin on the face, the dermis thickens and darkens to shield it. If the face is darker, it is evidence of environmental damage, which any normal beauty-conscious human being would want to rectify. The point of this thread is to share ideas on solutions that are not BLEACHING solutions. We all know that any product that removes dead skin without abraision will show the lighter fresher skin below the surface. We just want to know what these products are. We're not looking for products that will strip or peel off living skin cells aka BLEACHING PRODUCTS!

I think we should stop seeing women who want better skin as potential BLEACHERS. If half the black women in the world want lighter faces maybe its a baisc instinct - nature intended that the face be lighter. Try living in Alaska for a month using only vaseline and see if your face dosent get lighter than the rest of ur body.

Anyway, back to the post. A almonjoy, I'm keeping to the advise of stay out of the sun, plenty of water, sunscreen, etc, that should prevent Further damage. But I still need to get rid of previous damage gently. Any more ideas please?

What I posted doesn't relate to me advising you to use a bleaching cream, the product i mentioned are mostly use by both black and white people, the use of the product was to make your skin smoother and pimples free, so I don't know where you are getting that idea from about bleaching. lol u most be joking oh that the face is the more lighter then the entire body, am sorry to disagree with that because that is 100% false even my doctor said told me so, show me the an evidence to back up your claims

i have to agree here with moodylady that the face is mostly darker than other parts of the body as it is the most exposed. however the safest way to get rid of the darkness is by exfoliating, washing regularly, never go to bed with ur make up on and drink plenty of water. just cleanse and moisturize ur face.

Firstly, the reason why I referred to BLEACHING is because u started ur text by saying “…………………When will people learn to soap using different soap or cream to lighten there face undecided undecided

Secondly, and for the avoidance of doubt, the skin on the face is THINNER than the skin on the body – Google it if u want. If it thickens and darkens, it is because it has been exposed to environmental factors without protection, like sunscreen, and there is an overproduction of melanin to counter the environmental effect – emphasis on OVERPRODUCTION. Again, Google away for evidence.

If you live your life without sunscreen, you will definitely have a face darker than the rest of your body. However, if from an early age, you have used sunscreen that matches ur environment, chances are that your skin will maintain its NATURALLY lighter glow even with age. Now, some of us only got to know all of this later than sooner, and we already have not only thickened skin on the face, but also layers of dead skin cells that contribute to dullness.

So we now know to use sunscreen – yaaay!! But some of us actually want to exfoliate the dullness and darkness safely and gently. By the way, is ur doctor a MAN? Any surprise he’s okay with shades of gray??

The purpose of this thread is to share experiences of what works, whats good, whats bad, etc. so please it’d be better if u suggest products and tell us ur experiences and not dish out stuff like “…………………When will people learn to soap using different soap or cream to lighten there face undecided undecided

I’ve also discovered a website where women all over the world tell their experiences with a vast range of beauty products, and believe me they tell it like it is. You can even check whether they are black, white, asian etc so u know whether to take their advice – even for perfumes, make up tool – the works!! Its http://www.makeupalley.com. Registration is free and fast and u can post ur own reviews to enrich the sharing experience!

Enjoy, and do keep the info coming

lol when did black people start using sunscreen, abi when you were in Naija did you even know what is sunscreen cheesy cheesy, and anyway it doesn't matter what gender my doctor is and i still stand on what i said earlier on that the Face is the darkest part of our entire body.

In Nigeria here as you know, seasons dont change like in Europe or America. Its pratically Summer all year round so there's no opportunity for the face to go back to the normal colour. And as the face is always exposed to the sun, it gets darker compared to the other parts of the body that clothes cover.

If not for this exposure, the facial skin is meant to be lighter than the whole part of the body. Check out a baby and see what i'm talking about.

To maintain the normal facial complexion, its always advisable to use a sunscreen. Its practically always summer in Nigeria. We dont have winter, spring or autumn when the facial complexion can go back to its normal colour

I'm 31 years old and have lived all my life in naija. I travel out only for the holidays, only during summer, and I never stay more than three weeks - 'cos I end up missing home.

I LEARNED about using sunscreen to protect my skin when I was about 16 - then I never missed any edition of Cosmo - thanks to my big sis. (  cool cool some of us at home naijas really dont need to leave to be exposed  cool cool cool). But then I thought sunscreen was for the oyinbos as per their skin is so delicate and prone to aging. I never for the life of me thought that dear old african skin needed any special care. I actually thought all I needed was to play with make up and I'll be fine. Now however, I'm a lot wiser. The earlier u take care of ur skin, the longer it'll look better.

I know ure not recommending bleaching products for anyone, I neveer said u did. I only have a problem with ur implied assumption, that if i want to get rid of dark grey shades it means i'm trying to ", use different soap or cream to lighten their face undecided undecided"

The topic of this thread actually stresses BRIGHTENING as opposed to lightening.

Like Suze says, naija has harsh sun all year round. Depending on where u are, u may need as much as an spf45 sunscreen, and those things are not even pleasant to use! imagine putiing that gunk OVER ur regular face creme shocked!!

Again, this thread is to help us dark skin beauties explore what works for black skin. A lot of info out there is for caucasians and asians. This is just a simple home-grown opportunity to share and help ourselves. So ladies please keep the skin and product info coming. Lets not turn this thread into a scoring ground.

Meanwhile cool cheesy I had a local body polish treatment this weekend - WOW-. Its called halawa, done by hausa natives. It involved taking ALL the hair off my body with some sort of sugar dough - like 100 times less painful than sugar waxing!! then my body was scrubbed down with a local scrub (I'll get the ingredients list) and then I was POLISHED head to toe with a fragranced tumeric concotion. U wont believe the effect - I no fit shout!!!! So good I'm going to post the details here! The defuzzing must done by an expert sha, but the scrub and polish can be easily achieved by DIY. Amazing what local remedies can do for the skin - talk about Spa Experience - and for just 3k!!! grin grin grin
PS - It was done in my bedroom so I just walked into my bathroom and showered off.

Please also post any local remedies here o cheesy grin cheesy

I wonder who said d skin on d face is d thickest. i use to stare at my little neice; reason? her face is so clearer and brighter than her entire body that u might be forced to ask her Mom what cream she's using for the girl but she uses only vasline! Her facial skin is lighter 'cos she's not been exposed to sun and other harsh environmental conditions on like an adult. So, u need no research to know that facial skin is the thinnest and fairest (all other things been equal). Lets close the chapter. Period!

well, i use clean and clear exfoliating daily wash. its got miro beads so its very gentle. I also use apricot blemish control scrub once a week and clinique #2 cleanser daily. and so far so good.
Re: Safe Skin Brightening Tips, Please!!!! by MoOdYLaDy(f): 4:07pm On Oct 27, 2007

Anyway back to the topic

I was my face at least 3times a day with Neutrogena Oil - free Acne Wash, then Clinique 1 Cleanse (liquid facial soap), Clinique 2 Exfoliate (Clarifying lotion) then Clinque 3 Moisturize. and when my face is get oily, i just use face wipes. And on Fridays night through Sundays, I use Apricot Scrub, leave it on my face for at least 20- 30min, wash it off then use all my face soap again. What matters to me is having a smooth skin and soft, I really pay attention to all these darkness. But whenever I use make up, which is very rare, I use Clinique makeup remover before using any of my face products.
Re: Safe Skin Brightening Tips, Please!!!! by soldee: 11:54am On Oct 29, 2007
I've heard rave reviews about Clinique products - especially about the famous Clinique Glow!!! Wish their products werent so pricey.

I have very oily skin, and lots of problems with whiteheads. I tried everything but what worked was Clinique Clarifying lotion4. It gets rid of ALL oil, and even exfoliates with time. I swear if u compare my before and after u'd say I've had laser treatment. My skin is so much better after just about six weeks - no pores at all!!!! Its a bit strong sha, but if u have used hydroquinone in the past or any other product that has affected the texture of your skin, try this one. Use no.3 for weaker strength. It however dosent brighten that much though. wink At least not for my case  grin grin grin

Update:
I just received my new ID card, the shot was taken about four weeks ago - WOW!! This Clinique don try sha!!! cheesy grin grin grin!! Definitely a keeper!!!!!!!! I use simple soothing toner with it to calm my skin. Please people, I desperately need that perfect moisturiser to complete my regimen - one that is not pricey abeg!! any other good stuff?? cheesy
Re: Safe Skin Brightening Tips, Please!!!! by MoOdYLaDy(f): 8:53pm On Oct 29, 2007
yes oh Clinique products are very expensive but at least it does work well with the skin, i use their make up line also even though i raerly use them, it's just for decoration.

Well you can use Mary Kay time wise, it's called age fighting moisturizer and it's also suitable for sensitive skin. oil and fragrance free, i don't think it's that expensive, would have love to tell you how much it cost but the moisturizer cream was given to by a friend
Re: Safe Skin Brightening Tips, Please!!!! by Nobody: 11:13am On Oct 30, 2007
Try Clarins Face Treatment Oil-Lotus--40ml/1.4oz   for fantastic complexion!! Its a bit tricky though. I originally bought it because I heard that it can minimize pores and control oil. I was suspicious at beginning. I used it for a while but felt it is so oily then stopped it.

I later discovered that I need to practice with the correct way to apply it. You have to first wet your face with toner.

Then invert the bottle on your palm to get a drop which is already enough for whole face. I used too much before (2 or 3 drops) which is why I feel so oily.

I then rub the drop between two palms. Most of the times I also add a little drop of clarins toner in the oil to rub together.

After warming it in my palm, I pat it on my whole face especially my nose and chin. No rub. It will form an oily film initially but the film will be gone in few minutes.

My skin is used to be combination and break out often. Now it is normal. My pores also become smaller, and my complexion a whole lot brighter. I love this treatment oil now! The 50 ml full size bottle seems to last forever. Its about N7.5k at Clarins place I think, but worth it.
