That coup was not an Igbo coup, sadly an Igbo officer leaked details of the coup to Azikwe who then left the country before the putsch took place.

Hausa and Yoruba political leaders were killed and no Ibo political leaders were.
Hausa and Yoruba senior officers were killed, I can't recollect any senior Ibo leaders being killed.

Even though the Political leaders deserved what they got because of their excesses, that status quo of skewed killings was always going to result in a "return match".

Nzeogwu was a selfless hero and we need more off him.

It is not your place to say "political leaders deserved what they got because of their excesses"... their excesses is not your business if you are not the same ethnicity as the political leaders..

It's not the business of igbos if there's corruption in the northern region, mid West region and Western region..

Their business should start and end in the Igbo region and not the entire eastern region.

Well, that timing will mean one thing which is that he had accepted Gowon's overall prominence which is what he didn't want to accept knowing fully well what that portends for the entire south. Waiting for Gowon to fail won't have helped Ojukwu anyway as the newly created states from the Eastern region would have moved on with new administrators totally subservient to Gowon and the north. What psychological effect would that have had on the entire Southern Nigeria? Don't you think that the southern minorities would have felt that Igbos don't have the guts to challenge the north and feel defeated already?
The only benefit I see with Ojukwu delaying for Gowon to fail was the prevention of the massive death Ndigbo and other Easterners suffered during the war.
On the other side, Gowon would have been toppled earlier by Murtala and he would have carried on with the ji:had Ahmadu Bello had set out to do. The middlebelt would have been the worst affected without Gowon being able to do anything.

Ojukwu, Ironsi , Nzeogwu never thought of other southern Nigerians before they started their coup and created the unification decree so stop trying to claim they did it for southern Nigerians..

when in truth they did it to subjugate and dominate the other ethnic nations in Nigeria especially southern Nigerians. No southern Nigerian cares if Igbos challenged northerners because southern Nigeria was richer than northern Nigeria...

why would you challenge someone you're richer than

north could not afford to fight a ji:had even if they wanted to... the only people that carried out a ji:had was the Igbos through Ojukwu, Ironsi , Nzeogwu .

1966 was a coup by hatred filled Nzeogwu who hated non-igbos with passion.

in the 1960s , nzeogwu exhibited such hatred towards Yorubas.

"According to a Nigerian Police Special Branch Report, nzeogwu executed at least 4 army and police security personnel including one of the men on his team (Sergeant Daramola Oyegoke). nzeogwu also participated in the execution of Col. Raph Shodeinde, his superior officer at the Nigerian Military Training College and is reported to have shot indiscriminately at fleeing women and children.."..

the statement above shows pure hatred for Yorubas and a lot of igbos all have this similar behavior towards Yorubas.

The Igbo coup leaders did not mean well for Nigeria and wanted to forcefully take over all regions in Nigeria and that's why they only targeted non-igbo leaders.

It's not the business of igbos if there's corruption in the northern region, mid West region and Western region..

Their business should start and end in the Igbo region and not the entire eastern region.

According to a Yoruba dude, Nzeogwu's best friend was a Yoruba.

If you know the era of local authority and how one regional premier boasted about given regional jobs of high positions to foreigners and expatriates instead of Ndigbo and other southerners who were even more qualified than the expatriates, you embrace Decree 34 which unified the Nigerian civil service with civil service commission which brought Levels 1 to 17.

Normal and sane people don't correct distrust and tribal hate by killing the leaders of other ethnic nation's because that will make things worse..

The coup succeeded and it was an Igbo coup and it was taken over by another Igbo coup which Ironsi led..

The coup and Ironsi coup was about igbos taking over Nigeria and dominating the other ethnic nations which is why Ironsi created the unification decree to take all revenue from all the regions to the federal government because Ironsi and his fellow Igbos thought they will be military head of state forever.

That's also one of the reasons after Ironsi was killed in a counter coup Ojukwu did his own coup to take over Nigeria under the guise of seceding..

It was a Igbo vs north issue but Igbos transferred their aggression on the Western region and Yorubas.

Stop lying through your teeth. The unification decree said nothing about the revenue of the Regions, the 4 Regions of the time were controlling their resources throughout Ironsi's 6 months in office, infact, Ironsi's only budget of January 1966, was based on the Regions controlling their resources. The unification decree was only about unifying the civil service under one system

What did you Nigerians do when 6 months later, a Hausa man called Murtala Mohammed did his own coup, killed over 300 people, all Southerners, including the military head of state, Ironsi, and Military Governor of the Western Region, Fajuyi?

You Nigerians honoured the bloodthirsty Murtala Mohammed by naming Airports and highways after him and even made him the face of the 20 Naira note

You people only remember that coup is bad if it is connected to Igbos. But if it is connected to Hausa/Fulani, you people will clap and cheer

One of the most idiotic acts played by moronic Nigeria. This action consigned Nigeria as the basket of fools on earth. Murtala Mohammed was a dumbass solider whose incompetence has never been equaled in history of Nigerian armed forces. Murtala Mohammed was one of the reasons January 15, 1966 coup was precipitated. He was a member of bunch of northerners who were not qualified to seat at RMA, Sandhurst, UK. In end, Murtala Mohammed was humbled by a relatively junior cadet who became brigade cadet and graduated with the bunch of cadets from northern region of Nigeria, yet this brigade cadet had one year left.

Again the coup was a success.. it was a coup to kill off non Igbos and dominate non Igbos it was not a revolution.

Before independence Igbos were favored by the British and got political positions and posts outside their Igbo region that the Igbos were not supposed to get.

After independence the regions took the political positions and posts that was originally meant for them.

After independence the first president was nnamdi azikwe so that nullifies your claim that north controlled the federal government, it was Igbos that controlled the federal government and nnamdi azikwe used his presidency to give Igbos appointments outside the Igbo region and this was the beginning of division.

Igbos never had a privilege status.. the regions took control of what was rightfully their own.

Igbos are the ones mostly suffering the effects of Ironsi unification decree..

Number 1 for those who know the history. The coup was not a success as it was still an Igbo man that spoilt the coup that is Aguiyi Ironsi proving that this coup was not Igbo no matter how tribalistic people try to rework the history to try and paint the Igbo tribe bad.

Igbos were not favoured by the British. They made it based on merits. It was even igbos like Zik that fought for Nigeria staying as one when the North was ready with their Araba republic to secede. The West were ready to grant them. Who opposed it and made Nigeria one till date. The same Igbos like Zik.

The Nigeria you enjoy and you now work so hard as a tribalistic person to out Igbos is the work of a Igbo man.

When coup plotters k:ill a president or arrest a president and take over the president position then that coup is a success.

Ironsi didn't spoil the coup because it was part of the plan of Nzeogwu.

When a person get jobs outside his/her indigenous region or country then that person is favored because there are indigenes that have equal or better qualifications and merits than the immigrant they are bringing.

Zik fought for Nigeria because he was protecting his ethnic interests and he knew that the Igbos who have government jobs outside the igbo region will lose their jobs and he wasn't interested in building in the Igbo region the infrastructure that would absorb the jobless Igbos that will go back to the Igbo region after disintegration.

Racist!
Oil was already discovered in the Niger Delta controlled then by the Igbo dominated Eastern region so if the Igbos were not more nationalistic than other tribes. They should have been the ones asking for secession and not the North.
Be grateful to the Igbos led by Zik who didn't think well for your current Nigeria citizenship where in your Haman ways. You now want their descendants schemed out from enjoying their rights as Nigerians that their predecessors paid for.

Oil was discovered in Bayelsa which is the land of the Ijaws, Isoko and Urhobo not the land of Igbos... which is why I intentionally said Igbo region and not eastern region.. If anyone should have been asking for secession then it should have been the Ijaws, Isoko and Urhobo..

this your comment ( "Igbo dominated Eastern region" ) is one of the reasons why Igbo leaders started the civil war. they wanted to secede with the wealth of other ethnic nations then dominate those ethnic nations instead of giving those ethnic nations their own region or 90% of their income. those ethnic nations wanted to secede from the eastern region but Ironsi jailed the person leading their secession ( Isaac Boro ).

"Isaac B:oro left school to lead a protest against the exploitation of oil and gas resources in the Niger Delta areas which benefited mainly the federal government of Nigeria and Eastern region with capital in Enugu and nothing was given to the Niger Delta people."

If the eastern region had seceded the other ethnic nations would have protested against Igbo domination because from the above quote the Igbo leaders did not care about the other ethnic nations within the eastern region... and from your own comment you yourself don't care about the other ethnic nations within the eastern region...

His coup is not what started the war, his coup happened 18 months before the war started

What caused the war was Gowon's refusal to honour the Aburi agreement he signed

You're very stupid. Murderer.

Supporter of murderers.

Those Igbo murderers entered leaders' houses across Nigeria and just shot them in cold blood.

Including the Prime Minister, Tafawa Balewa, Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto, who was like a god in the north, and other leaders in the west, with all Eastern leaders left untouched.

Ironsi then seized power, and refused to arrest the murderers despite numerous entreaties from all over the country.

The killers of the elected Prime Minister and other national leaders were walking free on the streets!

As if nothing happened!

Can you imagine the EFFONTERY of these Igbos back then?

THE SHEER ARROGANCE THEY HAD?

They just believed they were superior to everyone else.

After 7 months of inaction by Ironsi, the north got restive, and descended on Igbos there, killing thousands in revenge.

Then military dictator Ojukwu declared that he would secede, not with Igbos alone, but with the entire South-South Nigeria, to form ''BIAFRA''.

Nigeria said: OH NO YOU DON'T MOTHERFCKER.

AND IF YOU TRY IT AGAIN TODAY, YOU WILL GET YOUR ASSES WHUPPED ....AGAIN.
