Extend deadline for the exchange of old naira notes till July 31 — Senate urges CBN.

The Senate has urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to extend the deadline for the exchange of old naira notes from the January 31 to July 31, 2023.

The apex bank had in October last year said the old naira notes would seize to be legal tender from January 31, a stance that was reiterated by its governor, Godwin Emefiele, at a meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, January 24.

However, Senator Sadiq Umar (APC, Kwara North) moved a motion on the floor of the Red Chamber on Tuesday, where he demanded an extension to July 31.

Most senators who contributed to the debate overwhelmingly embraced the extension, citing scarcity of new notes both in the banks and at the various Automated Teller Machine points across the country.

The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, put the prayers in the motion to vote and the lawmakers voted in support of the extension of the deadline from January 31 to July 31.

These politicians get tactics.... those new notes that are stuck somewhere was their fault they are the ones buy the new currency from the bank because of their buying of votes. If u extend am God go punish u ooo CBN governor. No dibo ko sebe this time. Na dem dey finish the masses

Lol after the elections right

If not for the scarcity of the new notes which CBN should have done something about even before releasing it, I see no reason why this crooked politicians should be dictating when the deadline should be. It's definitely not because they love the masses but solely for their own selfish interest.

I stand with the Senate on these,all those saying they are doing it for their own interests don't know wot they are saying.Imagine the deadline is 31 of January and so many people hv already stopped taking d old notes as of yesterday.So many big shops hv stopped taking it,u cnt use it in d airport again cos those selling their have stopped taking it.The new notes are scares.So tell me why won't d deadline be extended when CBN and banks keep playing d blame game on d detriment of d poor Masse's.Or u think if a serving senator wants d new note he cnt get as much as he needs in a corrupt country like ours.Its high time we leave all these political bullshits and call a spade a spade.

The Banks are deliberately hoarding the new notes, reason I don't know, the President and the Central Bank should not shift ground and the Banks should be heavily sanctioned. The only thing that worries me are kids that won't have pocket money to buy biscuits, because not everyone can do transfer and the money isn't available, we still run a cash economy, except we can create a swipe device for the kids to buy stuff.

Senate haven't said anything about the long queues all over the country, the scarcity of fuel no concern them, but na new naira note dy make dem shake for two weeks now.

Emefiele no extend anything!... The Senate aren't doing this for the masses but for themselves.

The old Naira notes will still be in circulation but in reduced quantity for the next couple of years ...

Just like the old 100 Naira notes that is still been used and acceptable

I'm currently in a town in Delta state. I'm yet to sight the newly designed notes here, infact no bank presence here.

Infact I don't understand what's wrong with banks, they are not making this easy at all, must Nigerians suffer, must everything be stressful for Nigerians.

Even to get the new notes from banks is an issue, the CBN should do something about it. Normally ATM in Nigeria pays once in a while, always faulty and no network, how are we going to access the new notes.
