DSTV And Others Would Suffer Huge Losses Due To Elon Musk's Starlink Arrival by abduleez1(m): 1:23pm On Feb 05, 2023
Following the arrival of Elon Musk's Starlink satellite internet, the likes of DSTV, Startimes and mobile networks like MTN, Glo including ISPs such as Spectranet, Swift, MainOne etc. will face serious disruption in their businesses.
The one most likely to suffer from this development is most likely DSTV.

For years Nigerians have been looking for alternatives for the cable provider who has the industry on chokehold with it's monopolistic tactics.
Cable will be the biggest hit by this development if Starlink prove to be reliable and better than current services.

The benefits of high speed unlimited internet means people will find streaming alternatives even free ones to watch their content, from movies, series, football, documentary, music videos, YouTube and social media all in one package.

What even makes Starlink viable is the sharing capacity and it's achievable speeds. It's said that you can connect up to 128 devices on it and has speeds of 50-200Mbps.
With this kind of setup, it means a whole compound or group of neighbors can invest in this and split the payment.
Of course, the initial payment for the hardware is much, but the subsequent subscription is reasonable for the price and quality.
It would be interesting to see reviews and user experience of the product in large numbers.
I initially thought the product would struggle in Nigeria or not scale enough above corporations but this recent realisation means Starlink is a very strong product and a market disruptor.

All in all, na DSTV I pity pass. They probably saw the light and rightly pivoted with Showmax. MTN, Glo and other mobile networks will adapt.

you really believe this ?

the only nigerians who are going to wind up buying starlink, imho are the wealthy ones.

With this kind of setup, it means a whole compound or group of neighbors can invest in this and split the payment.

1) sharing bills among nigerians is a RECIPE for fight.

2) forget the hype - like everything else there is a cap . so if for instance i am sharing with someone else - i will be downloading 500gb vs that persons 1gb . what happens then? currently i am extremely vexed becaue on eof my subscriptions which had been gently managing all day was finished in two hours after the kids got home. and no one can say just how the data went angry. now multiply that.

3) elon musk is not a philantrophist and just as netflix is cracking down on password sharing, so shall starlink crack down on subscription sharing.

4) the person whose name is on the subscriptiun is at risk for whatver nonsense the others pull. so if one of you is a yahoo boy, or torrents an unreleased version of the latest movie, or pushes revenge porn of a politician - na you the payer of the subscription wey go carry am

all this is the usual excitement of people who are yet to USE the service and find out what the real caveats are.

this is just the same hype we get every other day. company X is coming to kill MTN/DSTV

If they succeed it's going to be a huge difference in the way we do things.

I wish they succeed

Lol, you truly highlighted it as it is.

Me too I've zeroed my mind off it as I know it's mainly the wealthy people that can afford it or probably corporations.

That bill sharing has always and will be a problem for a group of people as everybody can't use the product in the same amount.

Yea, I know that subscription sharing will be limited after some time by the company especially going after Netflix's antecedents.
But I believe that won't happen until they've probably achieved significant scale.
Netflix password sharing and bills splitting was a significant driver for Netflix growing in developing economies. It's growth has slowed down and now they remember to start a crackdown on one of its growth drivers.
So, it's a matter of time with Starlink and it's harder since that business is hinged on sharing and large numbers of connected devices in the first place.
But the yahoo boy scenario is a valid negative.

These ones becomes a problem for folks with illegal motives. Downloading for personal use is not illegal in Nigeria.

Anyways, it'd be fun observing how the market is gonna change for the next few years.
If this becomes viable somehow for residencies then someway somehow DSTV is in trouble.
The others will manage fine. DSTVs main relevance currently is hinged on football, if data costs and internet speeds increase, best believe DSTV is going out of business in cable TV.
The same is happening in USA and Europe and other markets.

So op thinks that if you buy starlink, and pay 60 dollar subscription.. you can share it with your 20 neighbors and you guys can be streaming on 8k, downloading call of duty of 80gb concurrently and burning 10gb per day each person ontop say you pay 600 dollar and 60 dollar per month grin

If na you get starlink.. how you go feel.. answer me
Re: DSTV And Others Would Suffer Huge Losses Due To Elon Musk's Starlink Arrival by abduleez1(m): 2:35pm On Feb 05, 2023
All in all.... Even if Starlink isn't really viable price wise for majority of Nigerians, and isn't the disruptor I hope it'd be, DSTV will still be heavily impacted when Nigeria achieves world-class internet broadband at affordable costs. It might not be Starlink, it might be another company. But it'd happen.

It's living on borrowed time. It's a matter of WHEN not IF.
The stats doesn't favor the company.... Majority of Nigeria's population are youths and their style of product consumption is very different from past generations. A move to cord cutting is the norm for people in this age demographics, so that business model DSTV is will crumble eventually.

On that note, DSTV's smart plan to launch Showmax was futuristic. It'll benefit in the long run from the move to Streaming in Africa. wink

The Irony is that every modern dstv decoder is already internet capable if I recall. They have just not activated the feature. Check your decoder, it has a network port. I suspect dstv already have their plans for activating Internet features. I think they may already be providing same services in SA already.

Unlimited data is just a marketing gimmick

Every last one of these isps has fair use policy that they whip out when they start throttling your speed becaue you have crossed their unwritten threshold

This is why starlink already has consumer tier and corporate tier.

Yea, I think I sometimes saw that Ethernet port.
It's a plan they should reasonably bake in their ecosystem.

PlayStation games and Xbox also have internet connections and can be used to surf the web. This might increase value for the company.
I believe they'd explore these in the future sha and maybe somehow bake Showmax streaming through the decoders.

Anyways na observation mode I dey. grin
I go like make DSTV chop better L small sha. grin cheesy

E still make sense pass this ones wey dey give 2mbps as unlimited when they actually marketed 10mbps.

Honestly, if I see company wey give at least 10mbps for lowest FUP speed cap, e go make sense if e also dey affordable.

FUP or not e still go probably better pass the nonsense wey dem dey give most Nigerians.
The one I see promising is MTN but person no even know that one own 5G data plan pricing.

The end of dstvs monopoly has been coming for the last 15 years.

Cable TV is a luxury and not a human right and that is where Nigerians continue to get it wrong.

Where does he plan to find this unicorn of a card that'll charge at cbn rate?

Truth is that equipment will cost $600. It is pricey, simple.
