Why The Bill To Prevent Medical Brain Drain Is Counter Productive by selfemployed(m): 9:53am On Apr 09, 2023 |
I read recently of the Bill seeking to prevent Nigeria trained medical doctors from leaving the country until they've practiced in Nigeria for at least five l. In my opinion, this would be counter productive to the Nigerian economy. Instead, this is what the Bill should seek to achieve: 1. Increase the capacity of Nigeria universities to produce more qualified doctors. 2. Encourage the doctors to leave the country to more developed countries and work there for at least ten years. 3. During their years of service in the more developed country, they must use part of their earnings a hospital in Nigeria of equal standard and equipments with the ones abroad. 4. In situations, where they cannot achieve this individually, then they must be grouped together with fellow Nigerian doctors abroad to achieve this. 5. When this is achieved, then, they could choose to return to Nigeria to work in the hospitals they've established or return to train other Nigerian doctors to work there while they return abroad after the training. This in my opinion is a better approach to achieve development than what we currently have. Thank you Onutochukwu Uche uchetochukwu@gmail.com |

It isn't rocket science that the bill will be counterproductive. We don't value medical doctors in this part of the world. Our medical doctors now know this as a fact. The bill in question not only validates this fact, it is also a human rights violation! Simple solution. Bin the bill and considerably improve their welfare. But if you refuse to listen to these doctors, you cannot at the same time deny them their rights to move where they are better appreciated: it is wickedness! 1 Like |

Volksfuhrer: Someone said federal government is spending a lot to subsidize the training of medical doctors in Nigeria. So, government can't be training doctors only for them to relocate to other countries. If the doctors can't put in the work, they should go and study in other countries where it's very expensive |

selfemployed: I beg to differ. The supposed subsidy is omnibus and not unique to medical faculties alone across Federal Universities in the country. All students in Federal Universities in Nigeria benefit from one "subsidy" or the other. And if that is so, then why single out medical schools graduates for constitutional slavery! What about those medical doctors who were not trained in our Federal Universities. At least these graduates of medicine did not enjoy Federal "subsidies." How do we justify enslaving them as well? The bill is repulsive and if passed should be quashed by the Supreme Court for human rights violation! In any case if this bill is passed, we will produce fewer and fewer doctors in the long run. Only an intelligent student that is well steeped in self masochism would elect to become a medical doctor in Nigeria. |
