Deregulation will just be another means for the chop make i chop to continue, it will achieve nada.

As for those comparing the UK and the US with Nigeria, you ignored or chose to not mention a key fact.

UK/US are net importers of energy - i.e they consume more than they produce hence the prices

Nigeria on the other hand is a net exporter - i.e produce a lot more than we consume, why in the name of God are we paying a premium for something that we have in abundance

Those dat are saying that because d standard of living in nigeria or the minimum wage is lower than d US, so because of that fuel subsidy should remain, in other words we should forever remain beggers in d hands of govt, giving us subsidies like food handout? i dont think that way guys

Is not reasonable that govt should take it's subsidy, use d money to pay me high minimum wage and increase my standard of living, then i will gladly pay any pump price that is profitable to govt or oil companies

Whenever somebody complains to me that things are expensive to buy, my usual answer is make more money and u wont complain, its like a guy buying a car  and asking of the fuel consumption rate!!! dats a poor guy dat is buying dat car!!! have you seen a rich man asking for the fuel consumption rate while buying a car?

If we keep fuel subsidy we forever will have a begger mentality, and forever remain poor!!! no be d same head d american have dat we have!!! or do nigerians want to be the poor that jesus said in d bible dat we will always have among us?? Nahh!! not me

I am currently in the US, I work part-time. What I earn for two days work is equal to what the Nigeria Labour Congress is fighting to be the monthly minimum wage in Nigeria. ($110 per weekend as againt 18k naira per month). So, relatively speaking, gas is far cheaper in the US than in Nigeria (i.e comparing the amount of money most nigerians take home per month). Petrol price should be reduced in Nigeria. My opinion.

billante - Are you serious or just being disingenious?

Why do we need subsidy, what exactly is the govt subsidising? I'll humour you. Your govt subsidise the cost of refining petroleum, a subsidy which need not exist at all. Now, the same govt continue to spend untold amounts of money on turning around your refineries so that the subsidy can disappear but it so far all monies  has been swallowed by the invincible monster.

Finally, i'll be over the moon when your govt removes the subsidy and pay you your jumbo salary that you desire so much. Just don't complain when your danfo trip from Yaba to Marina that costs you 100 naira now costs you 400 naira abi your Danfo driver does not deserve a jumbo pay too? Once, your pepper seller, pure water seller, mechanic etc increase their rates in order to get their jumbo pays too, we'll se how far your jumbo pay will take you.

If there was even distribution of resources, removing petrol subsidy will be alright. Senators in Nigeria earn in 3 months, what Obama earns in one year. And that is just their legal allowances. If minimum wage was 50k naira, removing the subsidy won't be a problem for the public.

Petrol Sells For N5 Per Litre In Venezuela

Venezuela has not increased Petrol prices in the last 20 years

Venezuelans consider cheap gasoline a birthright. A previous government's effort to raise prices in 1989 triggered riots that left hundreds, possibly thousands dead.

The cheapest petrol in the world!
Robert Powell takes a look at the countries with the lowest prices at the pump,

10. Algeria: Algiers — 20p per litre

Algeria is one of the Africa's biggest oil producers turning out an average of 1.2 million barrels a day. This flood of oil has pushed down petrol prices in the country to 20p per litre, more than six times cheaper than the average pump price here in the UK.

The country's petrol supplies also played a vital role in the recent battle against Colonel Gaddafi in neighbouring Libya. With petrol production in the war-torn country running dry, rebel fighters relied on smuggled fuel from Algeria to power the final push against the corrupt dictator. Hurrah!

9. Oman: Muscat — 20p per litre

Oman's petrol prices also stand at just 20p per litre. Like Algeria, the Arabic state is drenched in oil, stepping up production in the last six months to 878,000 barrels every day.

8. Egypt: Cairo — 19p per litre

Egypt is something of a transport hub when it comes to petrol. The Suez Canal — a vital supply line running across the east of the country — carries an estimated one million barrels of oil from the Persian Gulf every day.

That's why at the peak of the country's revolution against former President Hosni Mubarak, oil prices began to climb, amid fears that the unrest would interfere with the Suez supply route.

But while this oil price rise pushes up petrol costs here in the UK, the rate petrol is sold at the pump over in Egypt remains relatively low, at just 19p per litre. But with the country's government still anything but stable, it's anyone guess as to how long costs will stay this cheap.

7. Qatar: Doha — 15p per litre

Prior to the discovery of oil in Qatar, the small Arab emirates' economy was mainly built on fishing and pearl hunting. Now the country's national petroleum supplier accounts for 70% of the government's revenue. Recent high oil prices have made per capita income in Qatar amongst the highest across the globe while petrol prices are the seventh lowest at just 15p per litre.

6. Kuwait: Kuwait City — 14p per litre

Kuwait is tenth largest oil producer in the world and its supply is thought to account for 10% of global reserves. But nevertheless, the government subsidises both public transport and petrol bringing prices down to just 14p per litre.

5. Bahrain: Manama — 13p per litre

Compared with its Middle-Eastern neighbours, Bahrain has fairly limited oil supplies. However 60% of the country's economy is still rooted in petroleum refining, which has grown strongly over the last ten years. The country is at fifth in the rankings with an average petrol price of just 13p per litre.

4. Turkmenistan: Ashgabat — 12p per litre

The UK government taxes petrol to the high-heaven, while in Turkmenistan they give it away — literally. Every driver in the Turkic state is entitled to 120 litres of petrol for free every month. If they exceed this, the pump price is only 12p per litre.

3. Libya: Tripoli — 9p per litre

As I mentioned earlier, petrol supplies in Libya have dried up recently owing to the closure of several oil plants in the midst of unrest in the country. But when pumping at its prime level, the country is the ninth largest oil producer with an average petrol price of just 9p per litre.

2. Saudi Arabia: Riyadh — 8p per litre

Saudi Arabia is the largest exporter of petroleum in the world. Domestically fuel prices sit at around 8p per litre. Yet only half of the population can take advantage of these low rates; as women in Saudi Arabia are banned from driving due to a religious fatwa (Islamic law) imposed by conservative Muslim clerics.

1. Venezuela: Caracas — 2/3p per litre

Yes, to get hold of the cheapest petrol in the world, you'll have to travel all the way to the South American country of Venezuela. Petrol is just 2-3p per litre in the socialist republic — that's around 54 times cheaper than prices here in the UK. So if you have a 70 litre fuel tank in your car, you could fill it up in Venezuela for around £1.50. While In Britain it would cost you a whopping £95.

Prices are kept low thanks to subsidies from the country's left-wing government.

Why is it not easy for people in those countries to smuggle the product across their borders? Because they have responsible governments.

Why is petro so cheap in those countries? The product is a God-given resource and the owners of the land are generously rewarded with subsidies.

Also, they refine the said product locally.

I think Iran (not sure here) only sells refined products not crude.

So, why must Nigerians pay for the idiocy that pervades their corridors of power? Because some Western countries-based Nigerians think so  undecided

Personally, I think fuel subsidy should be reviewed and perhaps removed; however, there must several considerations towards that effect. Although in my opinion, petrol SHOULD be way cheaper because Nigeria has crude in abundance.

Who told you the US and UK are "advanced" oil producing nations?

A large percentage of America's fuel comes from Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Nigeria and a few others. The United States and Great Britain produce little to no oil.

US produces 5million barrels daily and 90% of that is immediately stored into the reserves in Alaska. It produces 5 million while consumes 18 million barrels per day. What does that tell you?

UK produces 1.5 million barrels daily and consumes 1.7 million. What does that also tell you?

Must we always overcomplicate matters? Oil costs almost $4 a litre in the US & UK. . .so flippin wot? The idea behind the subsidy was so that the society's most vulnerable can derive some benefit too just as the welfare or unemployment benefits system of those countries. The only problem was there was no clearcut means of identifying these individuals so the govt felt it was best to work that money back somehow into the pricing of petrol.

Clearly this cannot be sustained so we need to: (1) introduce proper petrol vouchers for these folks (2) fix the refineries like its already been said; and (3) DEREGULATE the industry completely

During the fall of 2008, i was in germany. One thing i found out was that a liter of petrol went for 1.5 euro < N200>. However, we wont be too fair on ourselves if we used this singular factor to justify a complete removal of subsidy. The truth is that the german per capital income stands at about 35,000 dollars while ours is a meagre 1,500 dollars. Aside from this, if u travel from one end of germany to the other, u will always see where all money go to. Hence, when taxes are raised, the german citizens would be 100% certain of seeing corresponding developments around them. Unfortunately, we have always be getting criminal and inhumane treatments from our leaders. Worse, wat is the probability that any savings in subsidy removal wont end up in someone's pocket? Can our fellow nairalanders compare developments in those countries with ours. If our leaders cant use the more than 500 billion dollars on oil revenue since independence to develop us, do u think the extra 2 billions in subsidy removal would bring would be used for development and wont be shared in aso rock?
