The Group Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Mele Kyari, on Thursday, allayed the fear of Nigerians on the rising prices of Premium Motor Spirit, known better as petrol across the country.

The NNPC boss said competition among major players in the oil sector would force down the price of petrol as against the upward trends that have caused panic in the country.

The PUNCH reports that queues returned to fuel stations across the country following the recent increase in the petrol pump price occasioned by the discontinuance of petroleum subsidy.

Earlier on Wednesday, the NNPC said it had adjusted the pump price of petrol to reflect the market realities. The agency, however, failed to state the new prices of petrol.

However, several retail outlets sold the product between 600 and N800 in Lagos, Abuja, Ogun and some other states.

Also, talks between the Federal Government and organised labour over the removal of fuel subsidy ended in a deadlock on Wednesday as they failed to reach a consensus following the hike in petrol pump prices to over N700 from N195 per litre by oil marketers.

Speaking on Thursday in an interview on Arise TV’s Morning Show, Kyari said the removal of subsidy would allow new entrants into the market, a move he said, would aid competition and phased out monopoly.

This, he claimed, would ensure healthy competition which would ultimately lead to a downward review of pump prices of petroleum across the country.

He said, “The beauty of this (subsidy removal) is that there will be new entrants (into the market) because oil marketing companies’ reluctance to come into the market all along is the very fact of the subsidy regime that is in place.

“And that subsidy regime doesn’t have a guarantee of repayment back to the those who provide the product at subsidise price and now that the market is being regulated, oil marketing companies can actually import product or even if it is produced locally, they can buy and take it into the market and sell it at its retail price.

Therefore, you will see competition, even with NNPC. And by the way, by law, NNPC cannot do more than 30 per cent of the market going forward. As soon as the market stabilises, oil marketing companies are able to come in…

“Competition will definitely come in and the market will regulate the prices itself. Therefore, this is just an instantaneous price and within a week or two, you will continue to see different prices because of different approaches from major players, companies have different approaches to it and competition will guide that. Ultimately, you’d see changes downwards and it is very likely because efficiency will come in.

“As soon as competition comes in, people will become more efficient in their depots, in managing their trucks and in managing their fuel stations so that people can come to their stations. And it is showing already, right now, you will see motorists going to stations where they can have price differences, so this will regulate the market and on its own, the price will come down naturally and I don’t see any doubt about this.”

On why fuel stations hiked their pump price when they still have in stock already subsidised products, the NNPL boss said “This is the reality of the market. It applies to every commodity and not just petroleum.”

He added, “It could have been the other way round, prices could have collapsed downwards and those holding the old stock will have to sell at lower prices to arrive at market condition.

“It is not something serious or strange, this is a stock management issue and it is very typical, no one can do anything different about this.

“The prices we are seeing today at our station are the current price of the commodity. This means that prices in the market can go down at any time and of course, the market will adjust itself.”

Competition will force down the price, yet you pegged the price, total bullshit.

Truly, removal of subsidy is synonymous to liberalisation of the industry, but then, why fixing prices?

Besides, Petroleum marketers have association, that is the where a price is fixed. Any marketer who sells in defiance to the agreed price will be sanctioned.

So stop the dogshit of prices coming down on account of any imaginary competition.

The price of PMS can never drop if we don't have functional refineries. Saying the price of PMS will drop is like saying that the price of iPhone will drop because you don't even manufacture it locally - you just import it.

In fact, NNPC has become the world's most useless oil corporation. An oil corporation that is more interested in building roads and hospitals instead of having functional refineries.

No matter what, petrol cannot be sold at less than 460 naira, which is still on the high side. Yesterday, i got just a little over 12 litres for 7k, if not that i was in public, i would have sat on the ground and cried, really.

Let's see as it goes. The explanation looks reasonable but the pronouncement was premature.

They should have given permission to the new market entrants to carry on with their trade before subsidy was finally removed.

This would have cushioned the effect & minimize the brouhaha.

Since 2000, Nigeria has issued at least 20 refinery licenses to private
companies However, only one refinery has just been built because investors
fear not recouping their investment under the artificially low price structure
(Subsidy regime)

One legitimate criticism against this APC government is that it has done a poor job in the past in planning for the subsidy removal and in communicating the huge costs of the fuel subsidy and the benefits of its removal to the population.

How will it go down mr kyari?

Competition doesn't drag anything down, it takes concerted efforts to do that

Cement is a case study, even as damgote who is a major rich guy is the controlling it, he couldn't even drag the price down

Make una dey play

Simple economics of demand and supply doesn't apply to Nigeria

Nigeria has a unique economy that defies simple economic theory

Mele kyari himself knows that he is not sure of what he is saying

It will be observed that even with the new entrants, Nigerians will found out that the price will keep going up.

Some industry players can decide to create a partial scarcity and sell at cut throat price

There are other major and powerful companies in the oil sector who can compete with Dangote.

Well, I hope more Modular refineries will spring up very soon

The only problem I have with these set of criminals, and one important aspect of this whole issue they haven't been able to address properly is, where will the new entrants source crude oil from before refining to fuel and other petroleum byproducts and sell @ competitive prices?

If it means buying crude oil from FG @ international market price, that means no amount of magic can bring down fuel price. Whether you have a million new entrants into the market.

Prices will come down

It happened with the GSM sector. SIM cards were expensive in 2001. So expensive that as a student, I laughed when someone like V -mobile came advertising with their then N20000 package. (Just the sim).

Now, thanks to competiton, the prices of a SIM are so low, I've gone through over 5 of them in the last 14 years. Lol.

The same thing will happen with fuel...but it won't be below 200 naira anymore. That ship has sailed.

while I believe it’s necessary for fuel subsidy to be removed, I also think it’s important you understand that the level of productivity in Nigeria is very low and it’ll be difficult for the immediate benefit of subsidy removal to be felt if we don’t find ways to improve transparency in our spendings.
10 billion dollars was spent on fuel subsidy in 2022, and Dangote refinery cost 21 billion dollars right? Why don’t you approach imf or world bank to raise a 10 billion dollar capital project credit for you? This money shouldn’t be paid to the government account, it should be paid directly to the contractors. These financial institutions won’t have a problem raising those funds for you if you can set up a payment plan that’s in keeping with how you handle your subsidy payments, that way you can always raise 10 billion dollar capital projects credit every year which can be used for power plants, military weapons, railways and roads. As long as there are measures put in place to ensure transparency and you don’t let loan funds be in control of any ministry or government agency, things should be fine.

What I said above is long term planning but there must be an immediate response to subsidy removal and I think the best approach is to open the border for rice and wheat, and also declare them custom free. Sir, it’ll take cheap rice and bread to solve the immediate problem of subsidy removal.
