Five Things You Need To Know About Fuel Subsidy Removal by peekspot(m): 11:13am On Jun 04, 2023
The President, Bola Tinubu, on 29th May, during his inaugural speech announced the removal of the fuel subsidy. With the announcement, the cost of premium motor spirits known as petrol went up with some filing stations selling as much as N700 per liter.

Contrary to expectations that the NNPCL would increase the official price of fuel in June, they however did so on 31st May, two days after Tinubu announced subsidy removal,

Explaining the reason for this, the NNPCL stated that since 2022, the Federal Government has not made any subsidy payment, adding that as of March 2023, the FG owes the NNPCL N2.3trn fuel subsidy money.

With the removal of the fuel subsidy, here are five things to know about the NNPCL and the fuel market.

1. Although the NNPCL is still selling old stock, the corporation has explained that it needed to sell at the new rate to be able to restock.

2. The NNPCL will no longer be the sole importer of fuel into the country.

3. The NNPCL will no longer fix the price of fuel in the market. The price will be determined by the seller.

4. The cost of fuel in the market will be determined by market forces

5. Government authorities would, however, be on alert to ensure that citizens are not cheated.

Better arrangement. People like A. A. Rano should help drive the greedy marketters to bring theirs down considerably.

With these "5 things" to know, I now totally accept that the Nigerian government is not a serious entity.
The number 5 on the list is quite funny. If every seller is at liberty to sell at their own price, how then would the government decide what is cheating? Anyways, is it the same government that have been cheating her citizens since 2015, that would suddenly ensure that her citizens are not cheated?
Subsidy is gone!
Inflation is come!
Corruption remains!

Most people won't hear.

They want the government to give them fuel at 40 naira per liter while the government pays the balance at IMF HQ and in Beijing.

Ah well.

How individuals with sane mind still support this anti- people policy still baffles me.
The government should at least fix electricity before the removal.
Price of goods and services has skyrocketed in my environ.
I got a notification today that my house rent which is supposed to expire next month has been increased from 960k to 1.2m with no tangible explanation.
The most annoying part is the epileptic power supply in my estate, we rely on pms, diesel and solar panels to power our homes.

Subsidy removed and

Minimum wage is still 30k, shouldn't that have been increased first?

NNPC will no longer be sole importer but as at date they are still sole importer and that means supply is very limited. Shouldn't they have opened up supply first before removing subsidy?

Sudden removal of subsidy without first opening up supply can only lead to outrageous price increases and bring serious suffering to most Nigerians. This is what has happened.

Removing subsidy suddenly, quadrupling the price of petrol while wages still remain very low is rather wicked

Although the NNPCL is still selling old stock, the corporation has explained that it needed to sell at the new rate to be able to restock

this is normal in business but with the ordinary man and population in mind they should retain old price or a little above the old price .
the ordinary man is just being used to fund the oil marketers business.

Don't just give us epistle for the need to remove fuel subsidy, also find a way to ease the pain by increasing worker salary, and also spending the yearly proposed subsidy budget fee to better the country it self

Nnpcl are still selling old stock but the price changes to help them restock..

Did they not receive money from fg to subsidize the old stock, why selling the old stock at new rate when you have received money to subsidize the product.

I see...

5. How will the government ensure citizens are no longer cheated when they want to buy fuel, because even when there was subsidy, citizens were still cheated and government through DPR, couldn't do anything about it.

4. The same market forces that isn't customer friendly? The same market forces that will still sell fuel at exorbitant prices thereby making the price of goods and services continue to sky rocket?.

3. Of course, the same seller that usually sell fuel at exorbitant prices will now have the right to sell the way he sees fit, making people who earn below minimum wage continue to reign insults on the government , and the government on the other hand, will be incompetent as ever, thus instilling more suffering on the people because we know 30k can't much when there was subsidy, talkless of now when there isn't.

2. Once upon a time, the nnpc weren't the only importer of fuel, those who imported it were like gods, and they have the exclusive right to do whatever they like. This same importers are the ones benefitting from the fuel subsidy, now they will look for another way to continue to reap Nigerians off, since the government isn't paying them their dues any more.

1. Yes the same cock and bull story we continue to hear. The nnpc took this initiative from the marketers who usually give this excuse whenever they want to cheat their customers.

Bottomline, the nnpc and the government goofed. Removing subsidy at this time when they know virtually the Nigerian economy is a fuel driven economy. Removing subsidy will definitely make the price of goods and services increase and the government doesn't have any measure(s) in place to help curb it. Simply to provide electricity, they're failed woefully, they fail to know there are ways with which things are suppose to be done.

People living in the rural areas will be the ones who bear the brunt, this same people who don't have electricity in their villages, this same people who depend on fuel for virtually anything and everything. Tssk
