A Nigerian student caught with cocaine worth about £1 million (N250 million) in his bag at Aberdeen Airport, Scotland has been jailed for six years.

Solomon Ukpabi, 24, was stopped by customs officers on April 1, when 8lbs of the drug was found.

The first offender, from London, was to have been paid £3,000 for making the trip.

Ukpabi, who is originally fromNigeria, admitted being concerned in the supply of drugs. He was jailed at the High Court in Edinburgh.

He has also been served with a deportation notice.

Lord Menzies said Ukpabi would have been facing nine years in jail if he had not admitted the offence at the earliest opportunity.

He added: "The ‘Class A’ drug that you were concerned with had a maximum street value of about £1 million. I regard this as a serious matter.

"The courts have made it clear on many, many occasions that those who are concerned in the supplying of Class A drugs must expect, except in the most exceptional circumstances, a significant custodial sentence.

"I can find no exceptional circumstances in your case."

Ukpabi had arrived at the airport on an early-morning flight from Amsterdam. The cocaine was found hidden in his bag.

Defence counsel, Jonathan Crowe, said Ukpabi, a hotel management student at West London College, was to have had his studies paid for by a relative, but the arrangement fell through.

He had tried unsuccessfully to find part-time work in London, but some fellow Nigerians had offered him the chance to earn money by flying to Nigeria to pick up drugs and bringing them back to Scotland.

"He didn't know what the drugs were or what amount there was of them", said Crowe.

"He was to receive £3,000 in exchange. It was a combination of his naivety, foolishness, and decision to make money quickly to solve financial difficulties. He now realises the impact drugs have on society as a whole because he has seen this first hand in custody".

British Revenue and Customs Deputy Director of Investigation in Scotland, Anne-Marie Gordon, said: "This case and the subsequent conviction of the courier demonstrate that we continue to play a key role in protecting Scottish communities".

could that be his specialty? shocked shocked shocked
anyway if the story is true,I pity the guy, desperation is a terrible thing.
But then again drug trafficking is not a good alternative.
He should have packed his things back to naija if he couldn't survive in London.
Now he'll be rubbing shoulders with hardened men that may sexually assault him and take his manhood.
Chei!!

we should have guessed your main motive for posting the story.
Like non Nigerians care about the village your criminals come from.
Most nigerian criminals abroad and in Nigeria including those that were killed by firing squad for various crimes are from a certain tribe that definitely is not Igbo.
Just look at the transcript on the popular CNN program "how to Rob a Bank"
and come to your own conclusions about the distribution of your criminals,at least in that particular burst.Idiot!

China Sentences Nigerian to Death
By Paul Ohia with agency report, 08.31.2007
Friday, August 31, 2007

A Chinese court has handed a suspended death sentence to a Nigerian, Obi Chinedu, for trafficking in 415 grammes of heroin.

His Ghanaian teenage accomplice Martin Offori was given 15-year jail term followed by expulsion.

Chinedu was arrested last year in the Central Asian border region of Xinjiang after he aroused suspicion when he dashed to the toilet during a routine police inspection of the train he was riding on.
http://nigeriaworld.com/cgi-bin/axs/ax.pl?http://odili.net/news/source/2007/aug/31/212.html
His luggage, which he had thrown out the train window, was found to contain hard drugs. He was sentenced to death with a two-year suspension.

The Ghanaian was arrested on a train from Xinjiang's capital Urumqi to the central province of Hubei, after police found more than 3,000 grammes of heroin in his luggage.

The court ruled that the two were involved in a joint drug trafficking operation but added that Offori was treated with leniency because he was under 18. It did not give his exact age.

China has launched a "people's war" against drug trafficking, with a series of crackdown campaigns and harsh sentences.

Its border regions of Xinjiang in the northwest, and Yunnan province, which neighbours Southeast Asia's opium-producing "Golden Triangle", are considered the heart of China's drug trade.

Recently, a Nigerian teenager, Iwuchukwu Amara Tochi sentenced to death by Singaporean authorities for drug trafficking. His execution was carried out on January 26, 2007 despite pleas from the former president, Olusegun Obasanjo for his pardon.

Amnesty international and Nigerian based Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) also joined in the plea for leniency which was rebuffed by Singaporean authorities.

The boy was arrested at the Singaporean Changi Airport in November, 2004, for carrying about 727 grammes of heroin valued at 970,000 dollars after arriving from Dubai. He was convicted in December, 2005. His execution was carried out in spite of a letter of appeal by the Nigerian government for forgiveness.

The spate of drug trafficking among Nigerians has been on the rise in recent times with several arrests at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja.

Not long ago, two suspects were apprehended at the Airport.

Muhammad Ibrahim Wudil, a crew member of Virgin Atlantic, who was caught with 1.7 kilogrammes of a substance believed to be cocaine just before the take-off of his Heathrow Airport - bound aircraft and a few days later Babatunde Jamiu, a passenger on the same airline and route had ingested parcels containing items suspected to be narcotics.

Nigeria does not sentence drug peddlers to death and this has led to public outcry whenever a Nigerian is sentenced to death abroad. However, sentences for drug traffickers in Nigeria are usually grave.

13 Rape victims now HIV positive – Obi
08.29.2007
Wednesday, August 29, 2007

Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State, yesterday said13 of the secondary school girls attacked by miscreants are now HIV positive.

Obi, who spoke at the launch of the state’s maiden work plan yesterday in Awka, said, “one ofvictim is a 13-year-old girl.”

He deplored the rapists for destroying innocent and promising school girls and pledged to do everything possible to halt such irresponsible persons from further acts.

He traced the problem to lack of potable water, as the rapists usually pounce on their victims on their way to fetch water. These young girls usually fall victim to these sex poachers on their way to fetch water,” he said.

The work plan for the state from September to December include provision of drinkable water to all schools, Obi said, and  directed that boreholes be sunk in all girls secondary schools in the state before the end of December.

He directed that generating sets be installed in 40 secondary schools, with priority given to girls' schools to enhance

security.  The governor also ordered for theprovision of science laboratoriesas well as ten computers in allthe secondary schools.Obi said the rehabilitation of aclassroom blocks in each of the100 secondary schools wouldbe in partnership with the hostcommunities and stakeholders.

Guy na da one u see, just yesterday, two Nigerian illegal immigrants were sentence to 10 and 5 years imprisonment in London, why? For the fact that they attempted to rob their boss last year with guns in his outlet around the late hour of the day, the London paper shows that they wore masks and that they called the accountant to remove all the money in the machine which she was about to do until their boss came and harrass them and the two flee, one jumped, broke his leg and had some cut on his arm, the other escaped injury. The Judge said that after their imprisonment, they will be deported back to Nigeria. Well, some Naijas will still say it's better for them, they will be eating freely sleeping watching tv, for those years, when they finish serving their purnishment nko, begin again embarassed embarassed embarassed I'm ashamed of them embarassed embarassed embarassed
