Interesting, maybe it's because it's singing about a mother, hence it became popular in all the tribes.

This is one song I can remember that did cut across tribal lines in Nigeria.

South African music is far deeper and vaster than Naija music despite Naija music being more popular globally

It's in my opinion due to poor economy and poor incomes In Naija so a lot of focus is on making short term songs with potential to be immediate hits

Also lower income and lower quality education levels lead to lower music taste and less investment in diverse music genres

Samantha, I wanted to just read and pass but let me add this, Nigeria has about 200 tribes and more than 300 languages or more, with 3 major tribes which you might know already, though I don't personally like using the word major for tribes in Nigeria because I feel that is part of the problem we have causing disunity but for the sake of this write up I will be using it....

The minority tribes tend to align with one of the 3 major tribes politically, religiously or ethnically by either supporting them politically, religiously or ethnically that in some cases some of the minority tribes learn to speak at least one of the language of the majority tribe while speaking theirs also from childhood.

Now the problem is sometimes some of these major tribes at various times in history have used these minority tribes who have aligned with them to try and dominate another major tribe either politically, ethnically or religiously and still happens at least till now 6-30-2023.

This has caused more division in the country, sometimes minority tribes suffer for actions of the majority tribes and sometimes don't even have a voice to speak out because of staying under the shadow of a major tribe they may have aligned with.

You see why it is kind of hard to have such unity song, here it is mainly about dominance to some major tribes, I don't want to mentions names but it is the truth and they fear that if they don't dominate like that, another major tribe will be in charge, so even if the country is not united or doesn't make progress they are OK with it as long as they are in charge.

For me I think Nigerians are more united when we host the world or when we go for international competitions, but the best I have seen is when we host the world, for me I feel our Independence day in 1960, Festac 77 in 1977 and Nigeria 99 in 1999, I only witnessed the Nigeria 99 FIFA youth world cup cause I wasn't born in the previous ones.

The country was so united for that world cup and a theme song was sang for it, people all over Nigeria sang that song like it was our national anthem, people learnt the words of the song even though the song was sang in just the 3 major tribes language, even the minority tribes were not even bothered that they didn't have a version of theirs, everyone just sang along even though we did not understand everything that was spoken because of language differences, though I would have loved another version where all tribes would have input in their own language.

As kids we would sing the song together while playing football, while going to school, even adults just sang along, I felt that unity as a kid in 1999, the country was peaceful and every tribe cooperated with each other to give the world the best experience of Nigeria, fast forward to 2023 and Nigeria can't even host any football world cup anymore, the insecurity is so bad that even as a citizen I wouldn't want to go to some parts of Nigeria and the root cause of all these is partly what I explained up there.

Nigerians generally are good people, the major problem is wicked leaders and gullible followers who follow these wicked leaders, as at today 6-30-2023 a foreigner is likely to enjoy better treatment from all tribes in Nigeria than a fellow Nigerian tribes man enjoying from another tribe, for example my sister and her family wanted to relocate from one part of the country to another, some landlords refused renting her family an apartment because they are from a certain tribe, but I can guaranty you that a foreigner will not be rejected by the same people.

I'm from a major tribe but if I were president today I will cancel all major tribe preferential treatments, like our currency has only the 3 major tribes written on it and even in schools we are taught that Nigeria has 3 major tribes and teach you about them then hardly teach about the rest, I will stop all of that, I feel real unity starts by not seeing any tribe as minority.

Well, enough of that for now, just be happy you are in a country that is a lot united, that's the song below, the normal one I watched as a kid and the interpreted one maybe more than a decade later, I hope you enjoy it...

Apart from afro beats and gospel music, I'd like to know what's that one music genre from Nigeria that's not popular, but yet capable of uniting all Nigerians from all parts of Nigeria despite them being from different tribes?

In South Africa I'd have to say it's gwijo music genre... The name originates from the Xhosa culture and it involves collective singing, it has now spread throughout all the South African cultures to a point that you'd find people singing this genre of music in celebrations, funerals, schools, work places, and any other community gatherings, it doesn't matter the tribe you're from... It's capable of uniting families, friends, school mates, colleagues, community members, and etc.

Some of us grew up singing this genre of music, but we just didn't know the actual name for it... grin grin grin

So I'd like to know which Nigerian music genre is also capable of uniting Nigerians apart from Afro beats and gospel.

I'll give examples of gwijo music.

1. A group of friends singing together.

2. School mates singing together.

3. Soldiers singing together.

4. A football team singing together.

5. South African firefighters singing in Canada upon arriving to assist with wildfires.

6. Community members singing together at the stadium.

There are Muslims in SA.
