The world descended on Nairobi’s Uhuru Park Saturday to mourn renown environmentalist and 2004 Nobel laureate Prof Wangari Maathai.
Diplomats, heads of international organisations, and government representatives flew into Nairobi for the final send-off of Kenya’s conservation legend.

The funeral was held at the grounds, which Prof Maathai stopped the Moi government from constructing a 60-storey skyscraper, in one of her most notable battles to protect the environment. She has been cremated in a coffin made from water hyacinth and papyrus reeds harvested from Lake Victoria. Green Belt Movement said yesterday they also used a few frames cut from a bamboo tree the Nobel Laureate had planted at her Lavington home. GBM executive director Prof Karanja Njoroge said the coffin was weaved by carpenters from the Kisumu Innovation Centre  at Kibuye market.

This lady loved trees even in death.

The country is honoured her today by planting millions of trees countrywide.

RIP wangari. you left a good legacy. We shall dearly miss you.
