I have domain names that I am not using, in fact some are even effectively lost, because I've basically forgotten they exist. I am sure there are a lot of people who are the same. The guy in question too can easily afford it, he is a techie who works in robotics and has taken part in DARPA races (where driverless cars race through the raw desert for about a 100 kilometres); he certainly can afford to keep any number of domain names he likes.
