Sam Sochukwuma Okwaraji, died on the field of play on this day August 12, 1989 playing for Nigeria vs Angola in Lagos. He hailed from Orlu, Imo state. Sam was also a trained Lawyer from Rome Varsity. 34 years after, forever in our hearts! 2 Likes

Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji died on the field of play of cardiac failure. He did not die playing against India after scoring a goal in 99-1 final score as told in a distorted history. How Sam Okwaraji died: When he collapsed in the 77th minute of the match, the stadium Ambulance failed to start and medics couldn't transport him to the hospital in time. He sadly met his untimely death right in the football field before the eyes of over 20,000 spectators. Five fans also died that day from the stampede that ensued. At the point of death, Sam Okwaraji was a PhD holder and a trained Lawyer from University of Rome in Italy. Since his death, history has not been kind to him. Federal Government have not Immortalized him. He died in vain? Sam Okwaraji, 25, had a glorious football career in Europe before his sudden death on the field of play in National Stadium Surulere, Lagos.
