RESOLUTION OF ATI ANNANG FOUNDATION ON THE AMENDMENT TO THE AKWA IBOM STATE TRADITIONAL RULERS LAW CAP 155 LAW OF AKWA IBOM STATE, 2023

Arising from the joint meeting of the International Executive Council and the Board of Trustees of Ati Annang Foundation held on 22nd September, 2023, and drawing from the preamble of our Constitution, which makes Ati Annang a vocal group of the Annang Nation, desirous of collectively defining, articulating and implementing the goals and ideals of Annang ethnic nationality. The meeting reviewed the recent amendment to the Traditional Rulers Law, which makes and places the Oku Ibom Ibibio as the President General in perpetuity, contrary to the previous rotational provision among the Paramount Rulers in the State which ensured peace, brotherliness, harmonious coexistence and unity.

The meeting on behalf of the Foundation, and indeed Annang Nation, rejected in its entirety the said amendment which is obnoxious, discriminatory and contrary to the intent and purposes of sections 17 and 42 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended.

These sections provides that every citizen shall have equality of right, obligations and opportunities before the law, and equally that, no citizen of Nigeria shall be subjected to any disability or deprivation merely by reason of the circumstance of his birth.

The recent amendment which provides in its section 47(1) that the President General of the State Council of Chiefs shall be the Oku Ibom Ibibio who shall represent the largest ethnic group in the State, and section 48 which provides that the Vice President 1 shall be the Okuku Annang, representing the 2nd largest ethnic group in the State, while the Vice President 2 shall be the Ahta Oro, representing the 3rd largest ethnic group in the State, contravene the above provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended.

We call on His Excellency the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, who by his office, has the entire Akwa Ibom State as his constituency, not to accent to this obnoxious amendment which has the potential to create friction, hatred, disunity, discord and likely breakdown of peace amongst the ethnic nationalities in the State.
