Explore Your Options If You Need To Defer Your Enrollment by Kishaimmigratio: 9:42pm On Dec 07, 2023 |
"While engaging in your study abroad program in Canada, you may encounter circumstances that necessitate deferring your program's start date to the subsequent semester, as authorized by your Canadian Designated Learning Institution (DLI). This could arise due to reasons such as a family emergency or the need to accumulate additional funds. Upon securing your Canadian study permit, formal approval from your DLI is required to defer the initial program start date. Subsequently, you have several options available should you choose to remain in Canada while deferring your program start date. Option 1: Resume Studies at the End of Your Deferral Period Following the deferral of your enrollment at your Canadian DLI, if you choose to stay in Canada, you are required to recommence your studies either at the beginning of the subsequent semester or within 150 days from the confirmation of your deferred enrollment, depending on whichever comes first. Option 2: Change Your Canadian Student Status Another available option, should you decide to stay in Canada after deferring your enrollment, is to change your international student status to either visitor or worker status. To transition to a visitor record, it is essential to apply at least 30 days before the expiration of your current status or study permit. It's important to distinguish between a visitor record and a visitor visa. A visitor visa is a mandatory document for travel and entry into Canada, permitting a stay of up to six months. Conversely, a visitor record, issued by either the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) or IRCC, extends the duration of stay in Canada. This record is applicable to temporary residents, allowing them to stay longer as visitors, workers authorized to work without a work permit, or students authorized to study without a study permit. While a visitor record extends the stay, it's crucial to note that it does not guarantee the ability to leave and re-enter Canada. Option 3: Leave Canada The final available choice following the deferral of your program enrollment is to leave Canada. This option is advisable if you are certain that you will not be able to resume your studies within the 150-day timeframe, or if the circumstances leading to your deferred enrollment, such as a family emergency, remain unresolved. I trust that you have found these insights valuable. If you have any questions or would like to share your perspective, feel free to leave a comment in the comment section below.
