I find myself at a crossroads like the OP above therefore seeking your guidance. Having earned a degree in Chemistry, I subsequently pursued a PGDE and secured a teaching position at a private school, specializing in chemistry, with a current monthly salary of 150k. Despite this, my enduring passion for medicine persists.

At 38 years old, balancing family responsibilities with a wife and baby, I also manage a successful patent medicine shop, duly licensed by the PCN, generating daily sales. My dilemma lies in whether to resign from my teaching position, focus on the patent medicine shop, and also have time to embark on a degree in Medicine or should I continue with the teaching job. Daily as I wake I have the urge to resign while the age factors weigh me down and get to sponsor myself and my family since I have been self-sponsored right from my university days. Your advice on navigating this pivotal decision would be invaluable

38 is not too old to pursue your dreams and if you become a doctor at 45, nobody would know when you graduated... One thing about age is that whether you chase your dreams or not, you'll get older, so it's better to chase your dreams regardless of age cos you can't stop time.

If possible, save up enough for your first 2-3 years of studies so that you can withstand any challenges that occur on your path.

If you can fund your drug store properly and have it effectively managed, it would go a long way in helping you. Remember medicine isn't a course you can study with much distractions. A friend of mine told me she studies about 10hrs daily...

Good luck!

There is nothing in medicine. Its a profession living on past glory. The world has moved on from I wany to be a doctor, I want to be an engineer. Many of them are poor and struggling.

Can you highlight the steps you took in registering your medicine shop by PCN? And can you kindly state how much profit you make on average monthly.

1. Discuss with your wife. Whatever you want to do now depends on her cooperation or you'll suffer. Talk with her. Get her commitment cos she won't find it easy too. Medicine takes a lot of time and focus.

2. If you patent store gives you at least 100k monthly, you can scale to 250k monthly within a year. Again, your wife will need to help you out.

3. If your wife is not working yet, you might want to ask her to assume responsibility of the store, when you quit you job.

4. Remember to create another source of income to support the store. Business doesn't move well always.

5. You can plan for the next months. Jamb is coming up soon. Register, write, and keep planning. Make sure to apply to a university close to your place of residence.

God bless you, brother. You'll be done in no time!

PCN conducts exams for those who intend to operate a patent medicine shop after the purchase of the form and inspection of the shop. The shop must be located in the rural areas of the state or locality you reside.
The basic requirement is your O-level result precisely a science result or pharmacy technician certificate. You must be at least 23 years of age and attend continuous education training organized by PCN.
After the success of the examination, you will be issued a PPMV license which must be renewed every year and the PCN team will visit your shop for inspection continuously to ensure you observe the rules and regulations of operation.

Thank you for the advice, I am deeply grateful.
On the average, I make like 150k to 200k profit monthly which can be more than that if I fully present there.
I return to the shop in the evening around 7 pm till 10 pm. Hence the reason why I want to resign to focus on the shop and have time to go to school.

I wanted studying pharmacy in the university but I didn't. I think I have a shot of opening a pharmacy store with just my O'level along side some PCN trainings.

Thanks.

How do you intend to support yourself, your wife, and your kid while in medical school? Please do not say things like your side gig would automagically take care of all of your expenses. undecided

There’s an army general studying medicine in my department. He’s well above 50 years old and also a nurse.
There are others too. So if you’re passionate about the course, then plan for it.
Age should be the least of your worries.

Passion will not pay your bills.

Expand your sources of income and be sure you can fund this before embarking on it if you insist.

You have a family. I am not sure you understand the sacrifice of studying medicine as a teenager talk less of your age and a family. Please ask your wife and work with her advice. Hmm, I am not sure this is right.

Age should never be a factor to achieving ones dream.

Have a year savings of your current salary.

And ask your wife if she can support this your quest for knowledge.

Medicine is really worth it.
