Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben is hoping to put the "worst injury of my life'' behind him when he returns to action against German champions Borussia Dortmund tomorrow.

The Holland international underwent surgery on a troublesome groin injury over a month ago, but is ready to return in tomorrow's top-of-the-table clash.

"Despite having numerous injuries, I have never had one like this,'' he told the Bild newspaper.

"It was hard to diagnose and it hurt while the recovery was complicated too.

"It was the worst injury of my life.''

Robben has made good use of the international break to work on his comeback at Bayern's training ground and he feels ready to play again, although he has also urged caution.

"We definitely don't want to risk anything by rushing back,'' he said. "But I would absolutely love to play, for sure.''

Robben is likely to start on the bench, where he will get a perfect view of the most eagerly-anticipated fixture of the Bundesliga season so far.

"It promises to be a really good football match,'' said Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp.

"We know that we have got to do very, very much right to get anything out of Munich, but we have faith in ourselves.''

Dortmund won 3-1 at the Allianz Arena last season to practically rule Bayern out of the title chase and put one hand on the Bundesliga trophy.

The hosts will be seeking revenge and an eight-point cushion at the top of the table tomorrow.

"That defeat really annoyed me because I had been spouting on beforehand about how we would thrash them,'' recalled Bayern's president Uli Hoeness on Antenne Bayern radio.

"We were pretty much humiliated ourselves, but I don't expect that to happen again this year.''

While Robben may return to the bench, there will be no place for Germany international Bastian Schweinsteiger, who has broken his collarbone.

His international team-mate Marcel Schmelzer is likely to miss out for Dortmund due to a calf strain that he picked up in last Friday's match against Ukraine.

With Anatoliy Tymoshchuk suspended, Luiz Gustavo takes his place as Bayern's anchor. Some would expect Kroos to set up shop next to him as the Bavarians' second pivot after his glittering displays for Germany, but Jupp Heynckes publicly stated on Wednesday that young Toni would not be taking Bastian Schweinsteiger's place – so Alaba starts in central midfield.

In defence, Jerome Boateng returns from suspension, so expect Rafinha to drop to the bench. In attack, Arjen Robben has been passed fit, although Heynckes may wish to use the Dutchman sparingly.

Having fractured his cheekbone in a clash with Wolfsburg's Sotirios Kyrgiakos at the start of the month, while Neven Subotic is still a few weeks from a return to action for Dortmund. Felipe Santana will deputise at centre-back, and elsewhere in the back line, Marcel Schmelzer's availability will be subject to a late decision by Jurgen Klopp.
