1.Preliminary investigation from the picture reveals expansion as the major cause of the crack, the heat this year is intense, they was no (Joint) provision made for expansion.
2. The underneath soil is expansive clay, which swells due to the rainy season hence the result you are seeing.

Recommendation:
The concrete should be partitioned leaving room for slight Earth movement ( this will prevent crack as a result of expansion of reinforced concrete as a result of extreme temperature and Earth movement)

Generally, he did a very poor job there. A part from your suggestion, the road is generally not smooth. If I'm going to Ebonyi, immediately I enter those nonsense he constructed, I slow down from 120- 80 . The roads he did are too rough..

Below is one of the bridge constructed by Bitter Obi.

I am waiting for OP to call him out instead of getting fixated on Umahi who have more record of visible infrastructure he embarked on.

What brought about Peter Obi in this thread na.

Does it mean that to be an urchnn implies a substandard brain.

Somebody made a clear observation that Umahis work is substandard yet, he is overseeing the construction of a road that who's price tag is more tham Dangote's net worth- and an urchins response is to say "what should we do with this news?

But the concrete roads constructed by Umahi are still intact with just the expected tiny cracks that are expected.

The ones Obi constructed are either in total disrepair or have since been reconstructed from scratch.

A lot of his concrete roads are failing.

David Umahi act as if he knows too much. This same man constructed concrete runway in Abakaliki airport that is not safe for planes to take-off or land on because of poor grip hence commercial airlines avoided the airport (aside that the airport has no economic value). He wasted 40billion.

While I know that concrete roads are good if they are properly constructed, like the one in gbagada, but Umahi will be forming engineer while he cannot deliver quality roads in his state.

I don't trust the quality of the concrete road that Will be delivered on the coastal road project. Umahi likes substandard and shiny things like China and Hitech construction company is not reputable enough to handle such magnitude of project. The only construction company I can trust to deliver is julius berger.
This is what happens when you give a road contract to someone who has no idea of what it takes to construct even a 10ft slab of concreate. No single expansion grove on the road!

Oga that is not the point, the concrete road in Ebonyi was poorly done and they never factored that high temperatures cause expansion

Sharp.

Concrete roads are better suited for tropical climes than in temperate regions.

Just as heating leads to expansion so also are freezing cold temperatures lead to more devastating contraction.

It has been argued for years that govt should invest in concrete roads instead of asphalt due to their longevity and easier maintainance.

I support the Lagos Calabar coastal highway. This is a legitimate concern. The press should ask the minister why Nigerians should trust him with such gigantic project when the one he did as governor is already cracking.

Too late for such question the project has already started so whatever you just take it like that.

Concrete roads are deliberated constructed with rough surfaces so as to improve the surface friction.

You have some points partially! Comparatively with Asphalt road, concrete is still far better.

For that level of damage I see on that concrete road, if it was asphalt, you would be seeing a deep valley if it is subjected to the same level of use.

try and be sensible and look before yapping rubbish. Concrete if no done properly leads to expansions that cause cracks also if the subsoil was not factored you will have this scenario

You guys are really born liars.

I have plied those concrete roads constructed by Dave severally even during the construction phase and yes there were considerations made for expansion.

Looking at the pics posted by OP, those tiny cracks are expected and only need bitumen to fill them up.

Allowance was made for expansion . I know this because I used to pass through one of the concrete roads constructed by Dave .

The most important thing is not these tiny cracks but the concrete sinking on its own weight and so far the road is still standing and has not sunk in any of its sections.

Those tiny cracks can be fixed by a three man crew.

You guys are now insulting Dave despite him being the only working governor that has built more roads from scratch in the SE .

Stop all these rubbish.

There is no way you won't get cracks as long as you are constructing with concrete that is expected to expand.

FYI, all bridges in Nigeria are constructed using concrete with asphalt surfacing.

Have they all cracked under the tropical sun?

If you understand simple Engineering you will get the gist that bridges are casted in segments and where these segments meet are the expansion joints.

Umahi castigating Obi on condemning the coastal highway is what led to this useless thread by a rabid Obidient.

You are now attacking Umahi's landmark legacies in Ebonyi state because he castigated your Messiah bitter Obi.

See the tiny cracks you are amplifying as failed construction .

Read my post very well, I have not for once named anyone in my post. The Engineer or contractor who done this is at fault here, however who ever it was that allowed this to stand without calling them back to fix this is down to be blamed. And stop being ignorant about anyone who does no align with your reasoning being obidient or igbo or so and so

And the road you are condemning was constructed in segments as well. Do you expect the entire surface to be casted at once throughout the length of the road ?

How is that possible ?

Cracks are not an issue in concrete roads but rather sinking on its own weight and so far those roads are still intact.

if you can , go fru my profile, I did a 4inch slab on my compound in Nigeria and stamped it,I have done this by myself ie supervising it.I created huge slabs at 20feet interval for expansion. I am a flued Engineer with 15 years experience in the Uk, so when it comes to Expansion, I know my onions.Thishas nothing to do with otti or who ever it is, It has to do with doing what the contract speciffy.

The cost of the coastal road, which is estimated at 15 trillion naira, will give the country 24 hrs stable electricity in every part of the nation. Why is giving the citizens not a priority? We need 24 hrs electricity more than we need the coastal highway.

24 hrs electricity will drive the economy and reduce the burden on businesses, especially SMEs.

The gbagada concrete pavement that you're praising is constructed by Hi-tech, so what's your point.
