Siberian Husky Association Nigeria Breeding Standard

The Siberian Husky Association Nigeria (SHAN) breeding standard is designed to ensure that all Huskies are bred with care, love, and adherence to internationally recognized guidelines. This standard is inspired by both the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) and the American Kennel Club (AKC) standards.

General Appearance

The Siberian Husky is a medium-sized working dog, quick and light on its feet, graceful in action, and free and effortless in stride. It has a moderately compact and well-furred body, erect ears, and a brush tail. Its overall appearance conveys a balance of power, speed, and endurance.

Temperament

The Siberian Husky is friendly, gentle, and alert. It is neither aggressive nor overly shy.

Huskies are known for their intelligence, sociability, and a desire to be part of a family.

Size

Males:

21 to 23.5 inches at the withers, weighing 45 to 60 pounds.

Females:

20 to 22 inches at the withers, weighing 35 to 50 pounds.

Proportion and Substance

The length of the body from the point of the shoulder to the rear point of the pelvis is slightly longer than the height from the ground to the withers

Coat

The coat of the Siberian Husky is double and medium in length, giving a well-furred appearance. The undercoat is soft and dense, and the outer coat is straight and smooth. Trimming of whiskers and the fur between the toes is permitted.

Color

All colors from black to pure white are allowed. A variety of markings on the head is common, including many striking patterns not found in other breeds.

Head

Eyes: Almond-shaped, moderately spaced, and may be brown or blue, one of each, or parti-colored.

Ears: Medium-sized, triangular, and set high on the head. They are thick, well-furred, and carried erect.

Skull: Slightly rounded on top and tapering from the widest point to the eyes.

Muzzle: Medium in length and width, with a well-defined stop. The nose can be black, liver, or flesh-colored.

Neck, Topline, and Body

Neck: Medium in length, arched, and carried proudly when standing. When moving, the neck is extended so that the head is carried slightly forward.

Topline: The back is straight and strong, with a level topline from withers to croup.

Chest: Deep and strong, but not too broad, with the deepest point just behind and level with the elbows.

Tail: The tail is well-furred and carried in a sickle curve over the back when at rest.

Forequarters

Shoulders: The shoulder blade is well laid back, with the upper arm angled slightly backward from point of shoulder to elbow.

-Legs: Straight and parallel when viewed from the front. The elbows are close to the body.

Paws: Oval in shape, with well-arched toes and thick pads.

Hindquarters

Legs: The upper thighs are well-muscled, with a powerful appearance. The stifles are well-bent, and the hocks are well-defined and set low.

Paws: Similar to the forepaws, they are oval and well-furred.

Movement

The Siberian Husky’s gait is smooth and seemingly effortless. It is agile and quick, covering the ground with minimal effort. When trotting, the dog’s back remains firm and level.

Health

Breeding practices should prioritize the health and well-being of the dogs. Regular health checks, genetic testing, and adherence to vaccination schedules are essential. Breeders should avoid inbreeding and aim for genetic diversity to prevent hereditary health issues.

Conclusion

The Siberian Husky Association Nigeria breeding standard emphasizes the importance of maintaining the breed’s integrity, health, and temperament. By adhering to these guidelines, we aim to promote the love and proper care of all Siberian Huskies, ensuring they remain happy and healthy members of our community.
