Don’t pay for transformers, cables, others, NERC tells Nigerians

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has warned Nigerians against paying for electricity distribution infrastructures such as transformers, cables or poles.

In a statement shared alongside a video on X on Tuesday, NERC emphasised that consumers should not be coerced into purchasing transformers, cables, or poles, as this responsibility lies squarely with the distribution companies.

The statement reads, “Is your distribution company expecting you to buy transformers, cables, or poles? Don’t! It is the DisCo’s obligation, not yours!” NERC stated emphatically.

The regulatory body urged consumers to report any coercion or delays in providing necessary materials by the distribution companies.

The statement added, “Report any coercion to purchase, or delays in providing these materials to NERC for prompt action.”

NERC assured the public of prompt action upon receiving such complaints.

To facilitate this, NERC said it has established a dedicated email and phone number for reporting issues related to network investments.

“A dedicated email and phone number have been set up to address issues relating to investments in the network as follows: idn@nerc.gov.ng 07074865354.”

I think we need to start exercising belief en masse to make things work. But few people will get there and shatter everything thereby making everyone go back to status quo

Exercising belief en masse? That's not practicable. Everybody's job is nobody's job. The onus should be on NEPA to get things to work not masses.

It's like telling Nigerians not to offer police bribe. If they really want to stop bribe, it's just for one Police Oga to move around undercover in mufti, & set example with one or two taking bribe & it will stop. But it won't happen because they get returns from the bribe.
Same with NEPA.

My area has been in bedc darkness since January 2024 all because the people are waiting for BEDC to repair the transformer, we contributed to replace the armoured cable without any result until bedc concluded that the transformer has packed up and needed major repair. Generator and solar have been our rescue. Meanwhile my mom's area that had the same problem just a few weeks ago has solved the problem when each house paid 20k to repair the transformer, the bedc official in charge still requested for a payment of 300k for himself which was negotiated to 150k,
another bedc official was still paid 15k out of the 40k he requested for to do the final work, the most important thing now is that they have light, unlike my area embarassedsad sad. All these stories from govt are just noise making sad
