Banks close in Ogun over security challenge

Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun

The increasing wave of bank robberies in Ogun State and the attendant loss of lives and cash is taking a huge toll on banking in the Gateway State.

Banks in Ijebu, Sagamu and Abeokuta yesterday shut their gates against customers. The closure, which the operators said will be indefinite,  triggered a biting cash crunch and panic reactions.

The Ogun State Banks’ Managers Committee (OSBMC), issued a communique after a meeting held at the Abeokuta branch of the Central Bank of Nigeria CBN), saying banks would not re-open for operations in the three senatorial districts until there is an “assurance of safety of lives and cash”.

All 35  members of the committee at the meeting told reporters that they had pleaded with Governor Ibikunle Amosun to provide Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs), at least 10 Hilux vehicles as well as to urgently convene a security summit to address the incessant threats to banking.

Another meeting has been scheduled for next Tuesday at the same venue to review the situation. The managers resolved to write a letter to CBN Governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi and the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) about the security challenges they have been living with. A copy of the letter they said, will be forwarded to Amosun.

They relived the recent experience of a bank, where a year’s profit was lost to robbers in one raid, stressing that they would not “budge” in their chosen cause, until their “demands are met”.

According to the bankers, they had planned to assist the police in refurbishing and repairing their two malfunctioning APCs, but got bogged down by a N23 million bill needed to put them in shape.

Amosun had earlier expressed concern about the security challenge, but pledged to arrest it.

Amosun said: “Let me assure you that we as a government are more concerned. I can tell you that we have taken delivery of one or two APCs and another 10 units are on the way. Ultimately, we plan to have about 30 units. But you know the huge investment required; that is why we are trying to see how we can partner with the people for assistance.”

The governor, however, said the APCs alone would not do the magic, but that getting the people positively engaged through gainful employment would also go a long way in taking the youths away from crimes.
Nkemdeme, in a telephone interview, said members of the public were merely reacting out of “speculations”, adding that the situation was under control.

Nkemdeme said his Command has appealed to the bankers to reopen their shops, assuring that enough security personnel have been deployed to strategic locationsto forestall and counter any robbery attack.
He said: “We are fully prepared to counter any robbery attack. The panic in town resulted from rumours and speculations of robbery attack. There is no truth in that. Nothing like that has happened; it is all speculations.

“We have put measures on ground to prevent robberies and for security reasons, it is not advisable to disclose such on the pages of newspapers. And we have also appealed to the bankers to reopen to their customers.”

Are you denying that there is a problem there? I don't see what the thread has to do with Aregbesola.

No?
People are dying needlessly, trapping the murderers or expressing sympathy should be the focus.

If simple robbers have those kinds of weapon. . . . how easy will it be for SW to gain those weapons come 2015, if they already dont?

People are vexing for this our economy o. We have robbers, kidnappers, Fulani-Herdsmen, boko harams etc.

Nobody is smiling.

So old boy like you no fit stop them? Nigerian men are cowards sha. Instead of jumping in front of  them and reading them the law , na inside gutter you run enter. And you no dey shame to post am. Which gutter did the police run enter? The one closest or farthest from the bank?
I go help you save face by editing that part of of your post.

Damn! Thank God for your life, bruv. It must have been a terrifying experience.
You mean they actually shot up parked cars like mad people? shocked
IMHO, it is either they are on drugs or politicians are involved. If it is politics, then I don't care what party they belong to; when they are caught, they must be wiped out; life is not cheap.

Rivers: Robbers kill 15 MOPOL in 3 weeks

3 November 10, 2011 News By George Onah

Port Harcourt— No fewer than 15 mobile policemen have been killed in the last three
weeks in three separate armed robbery attacks and several millions of naira carted
away by bandits in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Troubled by the spate of violent robberies in the last 21 days, Governor Rotimi Amaechi vowed through his Media Manager, Mr. David Iyofor, that he would surmount the brigandage through every available means open to the government.

In one of the attacks, eight policemen escorting a bullion van from Port Harcourt International Airport to a commercial bank in the city were wiped out and the bullion van ransacked. In that incident, Vanguard gathered that five of the armed rogues, who were dressed in mobile police uniform, were seen hanging at Rukpoku Junction and patronised an orange seller.

The thieves, it was learnt, were even seen chatting with a group of other policemen on guard duty with their stationary van at the junction before the van and police escorts from the airport arrived the spot. As the bullion van got to the junction, it was alleged that it developed a fault and stopped, following which some members of the brigands, also in security uniform, who were driving behind the convoy from the airport promptly opened fire.

Those who were with the orange sellers joined in the shooting, killing all the escorts,
the drivers and some of those on guard, including three civilians and made away with their loot. The police said N5.6 million was later recovered in the bullion van.

I thought I was the only one who noticed.

But he explained it to me that he was just sympathizing with Ogun. I give him the benefit of doubt.

I mean, he's not a tribalist or a SW hater, he's just after ACN states, which are mostly"unfortunately" located in the SW. Ignore the fact that he's not after ACN states in other regions.

I hope you're with me on this one.

He's just sympathizing.

Weird stuff.

What about APGA, DDP, CPC and ANPP? Nothing for them? Lol!
You are funny. It is a real stretch for any rational mind to link discussion of the robberies in Ogun state with specific parties. What is your rational input to the topic?
