Meanwhile at the same meeting, the Governing Council also approved new guidelines for academic promotions. This comes on the heels of a report by the Committee on the Review of Guidelines for Academic Promotions, 2024.
Some notable takeaways in the new guidelines are captured in Section 4 (i– iv) – accelerated promotion in recognition of excellence/commendation, accelerated promotion would be from the rank of Senior Lecturer to Full Professor, the time lag required (waiting period) for promotion from senior lecturer to full professor would be five (5) years etc.
Instructively, Section 8.2 (D i – iii and vi) also underscores the minimum journal article requirements to be promoted/appointed to the rank of a Professor/University Librarian, Reader/Deputy University Librarian, Senior Lecturer/Principal Librarian etc, as the case may be.
While commenting on the staff promotions and the new guidelines for academic staff, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sunday Elom, noted that it was the fulfillment of one of his pledges on assumption of office to ensure the yearly promotion of qualified, committed and competent staff, assuring of his administration’s sustained determination to enhance the welfare of all staff.
