Poets & Writers Magazine announces state and national prizes in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Because of space limitations, we list only prizes of $1,000 or more, prizes of $500 or more that charge no entry fee, and prestigious nonmonetary awards. Applications and submissions for the following prizes are due shortly. Before submitting a manuscript, first contact the sponsoring organization for complete guidelines. Academy of American Poets
Walt Whitman Award
A prize of $5,000, publication by Louisiana State University Press, and a one-month residency at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson is given annually for a poetry collection by a US. citizen who has not published a book of poems in a standard edition. American Antiquarian Society
Fellowships for Historical Research
At least four fellowships are given annually to poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers for monthlong residencies at the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, Massachusetts, to research American history and culture before 1877. A stipend of $1,200, plus a travel-expense allowance, is provided. The fellowships support research on any subject as long as it produces high-quality creative work for the general public, such as historical poems and novels. Residencies may take place any time in 2008. Submit 10 copies of up to 25 pages of poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction, a resumé, two letters of recommendation (sent directly to AAS by the references), and a five-page project proposal by October 5. Artist Fellowships
Up to 15 grants of $48,000 each are given annually to poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers. The $100,000 Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award is given annually to honor a book of poetry by a midcareer US. poet. The winner will spend one week in residence at Claremont Graduate University in California. The $10,000 Kate Tufts Discovery Award is given annually to honor a first book of poetry by "a poet of genuine promise." Robert Pinsky, Alice Quinn, and Robert Wrigley will be among the final judges. Grants of up to $2,500 each are given by the Leeway Foundation three times a year to support women poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers in the Philadelphia area who need financial assistance to take advantage of an opportunity for "art and change." Axton Fellowships
Two fellowships of $25,000 will be given biennially to a poet and a fiction writer. Each fellow will teach one course per semester, conduct one two-day literary seminar, and give one reading in the Axton reading series. Writers who have received a PhD in creative writing within the last five years may submit up to 25 pages of poetry or fiction, an undergraduate course proposal, a curriculum vitae, and three letters of recommendation by November 1.
