aefunai sug partners sidi ngo on hepatitis b screening and vaccination of students The Directorate of Health, Students’ Union Government, Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, has partnered SIDI, a Non-Governmental Organization to sensitize, screen and vaccinate students of the university against Hepatitis B. The Technical team lead of SIDI, Mr. Michael Iwara, with the assistance of some medical student volunteers who were led by the SUG Director of Health, Aiwerioghene Efosa, supported by the former SUG Director of Health, Okedi Williams while making his opening remarks during the screening and vaccination programme said that Hepatitis B is a serious liver infection disease caused by the Hepatitis B virus which is preventable by a vaccine, adding that the disease is most commonly spread by exposure to infected bodily fluids. Still speaking, Mr. Iwara advised students to wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water after any potential exposure to blood, while also urging them to use condoms with sexual partners and finally to avoid direct contact with blood and bodily fluids of others. He thanked the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Sunday Elom for providing an enabling environment for the sensitization programme to be held and also for prioritizing the students’ health care, adding that a booster dose for vaccinated individuals is scheduled for September 27, 2024 with follow up plans for both reactive and non-reactive individuals. While commending the partnership that brought about the free screening of students and vaccination of the infected, some of the students present at the event appreciated the University Management for its commitment to students’ well-being, acknowledging the Hepatitis B screening programme as a crucial step towards fostering a healthy student community.
